Now I can get back to work on my car, I want to change the induction system to something a bit sportier.
At the moment it's the stock airbox with two paper-type filters with no rampipes or stubstacks.
Which induction system will give me the best response and boost (I know it's not much at the end of the day)?
I'm thinking of fitting two rampipes (twin HS4's) with socks and retaining the stock airbox with cold air intake, except opening the side of the airbox up and meshing it to allow greater flow...sound any good?
Also - does anyone have those books on tuning HS4's, like filing the edges of the butterflies and stuff to increase performance? Are there good gains to be had?
TY, Lewis

Sounds like a plan.
IIRC, ram pipes give ~5% more power over stock carbs. I'd probably junk the airbox completely and just run sock filters and a good cold air feed set up.
If you can, have a look at David Vizards "Tuning the A-Series engine"... alot of the principles apply to other engines, there is a good section on modifying SU carbs.
I don`t have a copy here otherwise I'd scan a couple of pages in for you, maybe somebody else has a copy to hand.
Edited for spelling, again!!

Thanks! I think I'm going to give my beefy airbox with extra holes and it's twin cold air intake setup a whirl first - then drop it if and see if there's any difference. I might buy that Vizard book - I keep hearing about it!

It is the bible for any A-Series owner. You may find an airbox set up better, I suggested going without one just for the induction roar I use a modified Metro airbox on mine with a K&N element, I used to run a cone filter but I find low down torque is bettter with the airbox.

You HAVE to buy the book! its the best book ever written tbh and most of it isnt even a-series specific. All the stuff about induction is pretty universal. Ive heard bad things about filter socks. They get sucked onto the end of the ram pipe and then you only end up with a couple of square inches of filter for each carb to breath through which is obviously less than ideal! :/ As far as butterfly mods go the best idea is to simply cut off half the spindle and knife edge the ends of the butterfly. Probably good for a small increce in top end power but not going to do alot at low revs imo.

I'd go for K+N bolt ons or aK+N element in your filter box. Ram pipes are a bit extreme for your engine

Get rid of the box mate i did, i replaced the box with twin SU Air filters and Stub Stacks also got some Custom needles made and did the changes that slater just said to the butterflys. Ran her for a year like this (Midget 1500) then got the Whole kit replaced with stage 2 internals and did the same. does make a difference with the needles i will get the compnay addy for you they will ask when you ring what you want i just said the best you have

Cheers! Sounds the biz!
I'll buy these short ram pipe's on the bay then (only 10-20mm tall, full radius too) and fit some filters, and do those changes.
