-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm thinking of converting my mk2 Ford Consul saloon into a pick up truck, it wont be a big engined pro street monster, just a standard looking truck with the standard engine and running gear. so when it comes to filling in the changes bit on the V5 what do i do???, where it says wheel plan/body type do i call it a pick up?......and new revenue weight? ...whats that. has anyone had problems doing this?,would it have to be weighed on a weigh bridge?.....or inspected by SVA? ?. any thoughts cheers guys

Tony, your Consul is monocoque construction so it has no separate chassis. If you chop it up into a pickup then as far as the DVLA is concerned then it'll need SVA as you'll have altered the monocoque.
Sounds like a lot of work - may be easier to import a Ute from Oz? Then at least you'd have no legal hassles.

Interesting idea, Is the consul a basket-case? I hate to be a kill-joy but I love consul's and it'd be a shame to see a good one chopped about with. Although a well finished 'ute would certainly get some attention ;D D

Drop me a PM if you want to know more, but I have to say that saloon to pickup sounds a lot more work than doing it to a hatch or estate. Best of luck!

Job done!
I must say it's come out a whole lot better than most non-factory pick up conversions.

I actually prefer the look of that to the factory 'Ute' they sold in (IIRC) RSA and Down Under.

No help at all, but there's a Nova pick-up that's just appeared in my village. It's been done using a saloon, so has the useful extra rear overhang. Haven't seen it close, but looks quite smartly done actually.

That looks sweeeet!
Ive owned a volvo 740 limo and a hearse and on the V5 they were classed as saloon cars. Even the insurance companies said they were saloons. When I educated them they didnt care.... computer said saloon and that was good enough for them!

I had a Wolsley 2.2 cut up the same way chap had started it but sold it on, it needed a lot of work to use properly. And due to a lot of weight going off the rear end it was a very dangerous machine, as I crashed it twice. Even though it has long gone I wish I had kept it and tried to improve it. Good luck with yours. Andy.

When I did this... ...about 6 year ago, I sent off the reg document with 'pick up' as the new body type, got a letter back from the DVLA saying it would need to be inspected. A chap from the local licensing office came out and (I assume, I was at work at the time...) checked that it was still a Carlton, and not a 'glass 29 model A pick up with a Carlton engine, 'box and axle... But that was then, and this is now... Have a Velox Ute...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.
