This is going one way or the other, I just feel it in my waters......
I'm having a go at tinting the rear passenger windows/load area on the Ital to keep prying peepers out (possibly the front passenger windows as well - NOT the windscreen (shame!!!)). Anyone got any tips on how to fit this stuff (and get a professional won't count!) ;D

Make up a spray-bottle with soapy water - just a few drips of fairy liquid is enough.
Clean the windows, clean them again, then clean them some more. I use cheapo supermarket window cleaner and kitchen roll. give them a good doing to remove most dirt, then run a razorblade over the glass the lift off stubborn dirt, then do again with the cleaner, then spray once with soapy water and squeege it off to float off any remaining dust or debris.
if the glass is dead flat skip these steps...
for curved glass - spray the OUTSIDE of the window and lay the film over it with the backing FACING you. trim the film to the right size with a blade. Use a heatgun to gently heat the film and shape it with the squeegee to the curve of the glass. Once done, peel off the backing, and SOAK it with soapy water - keep it as wet as possible. soak the inside of the glass too. lift the film off the outside of the glass and stick it on the inside. Once in place, spray the back of the film with soapy water to prevent your squeegee scratching it. (I use an old blockbuster membership card as a squeegee - not too rigid) and work the water out from the centre to the edges.
On flat glass, there is no need to heat the film, just trim to shape, remove backing, soak film and glass then apply.
For opening front windows, pop off the furry bit at the bottom of the glass and when cutting the film allow a couple of extra inches to go below this level so the window can wind up and down without catching an edge here.
For very curved or compound curves, ie rear windows, cut the film into narrower trips, its very hard to apply full-width film to such surfaces, but narrower strips will go on a lot better. Overlap the strips by a few mm.
Once done, it might look a bit milky - this is normal and will fade after a day or two. Its a good idea to not wind windows up or down for a day or so either. Any remaining air bubbles can be popped with a pin and flattened, or if there are bubble "fingers" reaching in from the edges of the glass, keep working at them, smoothing them out and if neded a bit of heat from the heatgun. It might take a day or two to get them all to go away and not return.
Take your time, and prepare well. have a few sharp blades to hand, plenty soapy water and a nice flatsurface to lay the film on, measure it etc. don't do it on a windy day.

I tinted some windows on my mini many years ago and it was a doddle because the windows are flat, but recentley i purchased a vw sharan and thought i would tint the windows, off i went to the local boy racer shop and purchased some tinting film, got home and had a go at it, hmm.. the windows have all sorts of curves in them the film crincles up and pisses you right off, so not to be defeated i got hold of a tinting dvd off e-bay, watched it a few times, i purchased some good quality film from e-bay (think the member was ice-garage) and gave it another go with some success. basicly you have to cut the film to the shape of the window and shrink the film with a hot air gun then apply the film with soapey water. it is a very skilled job. i waisted about 7-8 meters of the stuff before i got it right. good luck..!

oh, and get the film from ebay, preferably fom america. I got 30 meters of decent quality film (enough to do loads of cars) delivered direct for less than it would have cost me to buy 6 meters from a UK supplier.

Be careful with the tint shade on the front passenger windows. There is a legal limit and it's a lot lower than that for the rear side windows and rear window (you cab get away with ambulance glass for that) - not quite sure what the transmission limit is, think it's something like it has to pass 70% of light through front sides. Oh, and don't forget to tell your insurance company...

Oh, and don't forget to tell your insurance company... What he says, but IIRC, it's not a problem if it's been done before a certain date, (sorry don't know what that date is!). Basically if you're driving a car that was registered after that certain date then it's absolutely illegal. (I heard a story from a window tinter about the new owners of Chrysler Voyagers being pulled almost immediately after purchase and their cars failing 'the test' and having to return their brand new cars to have the windows replaced! Chrysler did a recall on that one!!). If the car is older than that then I think you can probably get away with it, but it's one of those grey areas. My last daily was an '03 plate Omega estate that had all the windows bar the windscreen smoked out and I was never pulled up about it and that included a couple of encounters with the BiB.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.
