Just read that people use this to clean out engines too. Run the car for a week with pure vinegar instead of water, then flush, repeat in feeded, gets all teh rust and curse word out of old engines water passages. Sounds like a good idea as i have 2 50 year old iron block motors

Is it safe to mix battery chargers and water like in those pics?!?! the chargers/leads should never have to contact the water just don't touch the water or the metal whilst its on!

The charger is fused, just keep it switched off until it's all set up.

I can see the potential, hook up to the mains, connect up to an outdoor pool and clean up complete bodyshells with no effort at all...
and on the serious side, any old battery charger do?

Anyone know how long the vinegar stays useable for? Well I wouldn't put it on your chips afterwards... I've used the brick cleaner stuff before, theres a tub in the garage somewhere, not used with electrolosis but it did a fine job (can't remember what I used it on though) Besides, any container with that many warning signs on it must be good

The more power the better. I was thinking about getting another charger the same size and run them both at the same time.

ye, I have done the voinegar thing. I tested it in a plastic jar and a few rusty nuts n bolts and bits of steel. I left them maybe 48 hours and once removed a given a ligh rub over, the rust came away very easilly. Seems to take a fair bit of time on heier rust though - but then, I'm using cheapy supermarket vinegar, maybe thats why? As above, I will be trying the electrolosys method next, Looks like it could be significantly better. your French Wine does the same thing.... ;D ;D ;D Seroiusly though, for removing white oxide from alloy bits, vinegar is king. And if you dump a liter into the radiator it will clear out all the gunk after you let it run for a day or so. Flush it clean afterwards.

Had very little result with the vinegar method. It could be because i used malt - assume people are using the clear stuff? Garage smells horrible now!

'Twas me that tried the Tesco Value vinegar and I found it to be 101% useless on a set of Pinto exhaust manifold studs/nuts and cam cover bolts & washers. Even with four weeks of soaking! Might work better on mild steel though. assume people are using the clear stuff? Maybe.... Anyone?

I used the 17p a bottle malt stuff on my rear beam mounts for the rocco. I left it to soak for over a week and it got the majority of the huge chunks of rust off, but to get a shiny finish I imagine the more expensive clear distilled vinegar or electrolysis is better.

Thought I'd have a go at this electrolysis method to clean up my manifolds before I painted them. For the cost of soda crystals (79p) and a plastic planter (£1.99) I'd have little to lose. Here's the planter with my two steel anodes fitted. I used 2 anodes as the process works best in line-of-sight, so I'd attack it from both sides. This is my battery charger. Bit of a problem this as it's 'intelligent' and knows it ain't a battery connected to it, so keeps throwing up fault codes. After a bit of tinkering I got it to work and was pulling over 10amps. Gets fairly lively in there with 10amps! Another problem with my charger is it expects to see the current reduce when it's charging a battery, but this is a constant load so it throws a fit and turns off after a few minutes - and has to be reset, so I couldn't leave it overnight which is probably what is needed. Here's some results from just 1 hours treatment. Before: After: It's not obvious from the photos, but it's quite impressive for an hours work. All the rust that was impossible to get to between the 4 pipes has gone! I need to get a 'dumb' battery charger and do some longer runs. So if you're confident about using electricity around water etc. I'd say have a go, it's cheap and effective.

I'm keen to try this, I have some BMW E21 rear trailing arms and subframe that I was going to attack with a grinder and wire wheel attachment. Any idea with a standard battery charger how long it would take to do one trailing arm?
