W123s are really going up in the classics stakes - they're definitely becoming more appreciated. Mechanically, I wouldn't worry too much. They're just bomb-proof, and 164k wouldn't trouble it at all... obviously it's better if it's had regular servicing . Don't know much about the auto box but it's preferable to the manual - Mercedes didn't figure out how to build a decent stick shift til recently!) Body-wise, it's the usual areas - arches (especially behind those chrome spats as they love to hold water!), ends of the sills, front wings, rear valance. MB rustproofing is really good though (try getting thru the b*stard stuff when ya wanna weld!! ). I was quoted about £30 for a front wing (pattern panel) which is really good, and arch sections are around a tenner if you shop around. As for value... hard to say really but with full ticket and tax it's gotta be £600 to £800 quids worth easy. PS: Lowering springs are available from PI!

i usually think the interior can be a pretty good guide on how a car has been treated and that does look nice.
How many miles are those engines good for usually?

How many miles are those engines good for usually? Hmmm not entirely sure on that one. The diesels do millions. And I'm not exaggerating either! I don't think you'd come up aginst any problems until you reach half a million miles, then I guess a thorough going over might be in order! Someone else might be able to give a clearer answer on this though. But these cars are from an era when Mercedes built them to last a lifetime (or two) ;D

Don't know much about them, but I've often thought that an estate one would suit me perfectly if I needed something bigger than the Golf

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

So the Diesel ones are the ones to have in terms of reliability and stuff then? What are they like performance-wise? I guess they aren't up to much but how bad?

So the Diesel ones are the ones to have in terms of reliability and stuff then? What are they like performance-wise? I guess they aren't up to much but how bad? Hehe - "Mercedes Diesel" and "Performance" aren't normally mentioned in the same breath! ;D The 2.0 and 2.2 diesels are slow with a capital SLOOOW. The one to get is the 300D which is a bit more perky. Taxi drivers around the world have clocked up intergalactic milages on them and they just keep on rolling. Like mercmad says, the last of the truly indestructible Mercedes (although the W126 S-Class is a tough old thing too!) Oh, and I think I was probably a bit stingy with the valuing of that eBay 123 - the more I look at it the better it looks.... wouldn't go much over 1200 for it IMHO...
