Got the anglia MOT'd today Yay 4 advisories, nearside body has slight corrosion offside body has slight corrosion front body has slight corrosion rear body has slight corrosion ;D Got a few issues i need some advise on though. First off is a noise from the back. When the car bounces a little it makes a noise. I'm not sure if its central (diff) or exle ends (bearings etc). It sounds a bit like a clunk, but sometimes it sounds like a rub, or grinding gear. Any ideas? Diff has oil, bearings are greased, doesnt seem to be much play. Makes a clunk if you rock the car side to side. Second issue, its a bit of a ditch finder! Theres about 3" plat at the steering wheel edge (its a big wheel) no play in the drag link, tie rods or king pins. Front bearings are fine. I think it has a little toe out, anyone know the toe settings for these? Does the steering box play sound bad (i cant adjust it any more) or is it just a hazard of crossply's? One last thing, when i did the rear brakes i guesses the torque setting for the rear hub nuts, well, i just went tight. Thanks, more pics soon.

Great news! Jack the axle up and give the back wheels some action. It could be dead wheel bearings at the back, they are known to go. It's the axle that wears out though, not the bearing! Rubbish design. Check for play across the car, wheel up and down etc. 3" sounds like a lot. I've got a slightly knacked joint where the drag link goes on the box and it's about that much. There must be something letting the movement in somewhere. Even a tiny bit on the kingpins and a tiny bit in each joint will result in that much, mind. It will wander about a bit on the road but if it's toed out it will make it head for the ditches! 1/4 to 1/2 toe in is what the book says. I've got mine toed in a bit too far and it has the opposite effect and you have to wrench the steering about to get it to steer enough. Rear hubs - 'kin tight

I'm sure it hasn't got that much play at the wheel, or it wouldn't have passed it's test Isn't it 1.5" at the wheel on a 'box equipped car? At the test station:

I guess it is about 3", if it was 1.5" it wouldnt have concerned me at all.
There is no play anywhere other than the steering box.
The regs are 1.5" of play, but remember, 1.5 inch on a 15" wheel becomes alot more at the rim of a bigger wheel and mines got to be 17-18" i guess.
Just found out, toe in should be 1/8"
Ill set that all up and see how it is.
Ill check the wheel bearings too. Only makes the noise when it bounces and it did sound like a rub/gear grind.
Odd.

Thanks.
I know the diffs are made of fimo, will bigger rear tyres put much more straign on the diff? In theory, it should be spinning slower but i guess pull away will be harder on the diff.

Don't like stretched tyres, very low profile tyres & I think a car CAN be too low. Perhaps I'm odd.

17" rims are they?
Noise could be lever arm dampers, tyre rubbing arch (looks a bit low at back), prop touching, or spare wheel bouncing in boot!!
Love the headlight lenses and lack of horrible orange indicators. Don't spoil (modernise) it.

Oh, and steering sounds fine for a car of that era to me. You'll get used to it.

I spent ALOT of time and effort when i was welding it up to make sure i didnt ruin the patina. Its had sills a pillars b pillars front inner wings rear inner wing all the wing mounting flange bottoms of wings rear valance corners Probably more, but you'd be hard pushed to tell Backs not low, its got 525/550x17's on the back instead of 450x17 I put some spacers on the rear wheels and the noise has gone./ Looks like my first assumption of tyre rub was right. Just need to tax it, do tracking, rear brake cable, fix heater pipe, new tyres, timing and final carb fettle. Oh, and flush cooling (again) drive it a bit and drop all the new oils and refill. Then ill have a little confidence in it. It was last on the road in 1967!!

I'm only going to run water though it, no 'product'. When we got the car, i took the hoses off and dug thick sludge out the bottom of the engine. I tried to dislodge all the 1" diameter rust flakes i could see through the heads water inlet. I took the rad off and hosed it through. Its been up to temp and cooled, then drained and refilled a few times. The rads been flushed upside down a couple of times. If i drain the rad now, it still looks like thick brown slurry! I think ill flush it some more
