Just wondering if at the age of 19-20 (in a few months), i will be able to afford to insure things similar to the ones in the pictures below but not big thundering V8s or big capacity engined ones. Has anybody on here owned cars similar or other cars that aren't (i suppose) as run of the mill, and if so what insurance companies do you use? I'm struggling to get sensible quotes on a 1500 diesel 106 at the moment. Its an odd mix i no, no accounting for taste . Hope people don't mind me borrowing some of there pictures. Thanks Mike

Lancaster have always given me reasonable quotes (usually half of what you get by going to 'normal' insurance companies). I'd try actually phoning as many companies as you can, and get some classic car or modified car magazines to speak to the specialist insurers advertised in the back, as they usually give better quotes than the 'normal' insurers

Lancaster are usually pretty good, and think they do classic insurance for 19 and over. As do HiC who've been insuring me on my tuned escort since I was 20 for reasonable money - its currently £350 a year fully comp with all mods and only 2 yrs no claims (was 23 when that was quoted).
As for the cars you'll be able to insure a ford pop or beetle for not much, especially if the only mods are looks. Lancaster insured me on my Superminx (alloys, lowered and paint) for £300 a year (fully comp) when I was 21, but Hillmans do tend to be cheap to insure.

HiC seem good, but I got some cheeky wee pup on the phone to them once, and as such they're not going to be getting any money from me. Annoyingly, at 20 I couldn't get a classic quote so I'm paying for a full policy on my weekend Capri with the AA. Anyway, diesel 106s are fantastic cars.

I had this when I was 20. Engine was an 1172cc 100E sidevalve. I think I insured it with Adrian Flux but I can't remember how much etc. Was over a decade ago! Wasn't silly money though. We've used Footman James a lot but not sure if they have age limits. There's also Peter D James (I think he was a partner in FJ but struck out on his own) who seem pretty competetive these days. I think if you find an insurer that will do you a classic policy they won't be aghast at any minor mods either.

I put the silly overtuned 1700 crossflow in my 100E at 19 and found the insurance went DOWN from a stocker for some reason. There are specialist insurers for modified classics and they are usually cheaper than insuring a stock sh*tbox hatchback. You might have to wait a bit to justify a rod but it's only time. When I hit 25 it really dropped, like halved.
