What do you rekon the next gen of retro heads will be driving?
After thrashing one about last night, I think the Ford Puma will become a bit of a MK III XR3, so to speak.
Can't see MKIV and V golfs going the same way, but I can see sporty Seats and Skoda's getting the retro treatment.
And Fiat Punto Turbo's, the ones that make it past the body kits and neons that is.

It's a good question, I bet most of us didn't really care for the cars that we desire now when they were first out, so I would expect more of a car that can be linked to the era which are under the retro radar at the mo'.
What is the definition of a retro car, is it going to be like a funky 2dr 200sx/ puma / probe? or a last of the line old shape festa / cavalier / premera?

VW Corrado Mazda MX5 Eunos Suzuki Cappucino Daihatsu Copen Fiat Cinquecento All of the last MGs, especially now they've gone belly-up! Let's face it, all the cars we see today are gonna be retro / classics in some capacity. I can see resto sites telling people the best way to get rid of body kits and fairy-lights on a Fiat Punto!!

i hate it when people only assume fast cars or limited editions will become retro.
they are more likely to be cherished over polished classics. i see retro as the "curse word" noone else likes because they are too stupid too look past the end of their own nose and badge snobbery.

The SEAT Leon is a good little car for a modern one, even the base model 1400 ones are brilliant, I drove one for a few weeks as and it was nice! Also the recently replaced Skoda Octavia. I'm not a great fan of the MCC Smart because of it's yuppie-ish image and it just doesn't suit me really I don't think, but it'll be a definate iconic car of the future. Although I'm not massively keen on Citroen Saxos, give it a good few years until there are none left and I might be a bit interested by tidy, unmolested ones. I also have a bit of a thing for modern Russian cars, but then again most of them are fundamentally similar to the retro ones I drool over at the moment, i.e. the modern GAZ Volga, which is heavily based on the Volga M24 from the 70s, or the UAZ 469, which is still in production as the UAZ Hunter. They still make Lada Rivas too!

no idea TBH, i don't really pay any attention to many motors made after '90, they're all much the same in appearance, seem pretty soul less and dull.

I reckon they'll be sticking T5 lumps into the new Volvo S60s in 15 years time ;D
Think most cars are fairly similar nowadays, saftey, preformance family saloons. Thus I think the unusual modern cars will make it to be retro, the Smart roadster or sport or what ever it is, that that 'derierre' car, ugly as hell but will last the test of time.

Fiat Multipla (not the soulless new versions though) (so ugly they're cool, fantastic interiors, excellent to drive (well the 1.9JTD is anyway, loads of people think they're horrible) Fiat Barchetta (LHD only, and I think i'm right in saying the cheapest way to go topless in a new car, beautiful styling, never going to sell in any great number though) Audi A2 (Stupendously unsuccesful due to being hideously over priced, stunning shape, forward thinking design, and I really like them) Mazda RX8 (beautiful, suicide doors, rotary engine, although in danger of being too successful at the moment) Honda Accord (Estate obviously, in gunmetal with the gunmetal alloys. Why? COG! and also fantastic design/shape, and so comfortable to drive) Daihatsu YRV thingy (incredibly cheap, turbo motor with ridiculous understeer, sure to be a massive faliure but hilarious)
...and I agree with everything Benzboy said too.

the worst thign about modern cars is platform sharing, which means a lot of cars end up feeling the same to drive.. no fun that

When you look past the badges there must be about ten cars on the market right now, which stinks. On the up-side, at least parts interchanging will be easier for future modders!

i think for a car to become retro-cool it has to be available in slightly limited numbers, be quirky, and be head-turning.
Think top-of-range - in much the same way over half the Mk2 Golf's surviving seem to be GTIs then i think the top of the line family hatches of now will survive - Mondeo ST220, Zafira GSi, Astra Coupe Turbo, Octavia VRs Volkswagens - maybe the Lupo GTi at a push but they're all lusted after so much then every curse word has a golf gttdi and they're just too common to be cool in 15 years.
I agree about the platform sharing - it's just dull, dull, dull and i read this week about the Citroen/Toyota/Peugeot new supermini which takes it one step further, even body panels are interchangable.... bootlid/doors etc are identical. However, it does mean things like in 20 years time buy a base model Bora, probably be looking slightly ratty by then - buy a rear-end shunt TT Quattro - extract engine and drivetrain - viola hehe

I think its virtually impossible to predict what cars will be popular/sought after by retro-riders of the future - if indeed people would be interested or even be able to (for whatever reason) Be interested in old cars. We do seem to live in a time where items of nostalgia are very popular - I think in part as a result of technology marching-on so quickly that things seem to quickly become dated. Who would have thought in the early eighties that in twenty or so years that some people would be interested and enthusiastic over what would have been mundane everyday cars like my Derby or Rmad's Cressida Similarly I cannot see why someone in 2020 would be lusting after a Honda Jazz. P.S; I disagree with the comment that 'all modern cars are dull and look the same' I think that for any given period in time car design has to follow the fashion and trends of the time i.e in the 30-40s cars generally had wings, upright radiator grilles and long narrow bonnets, in the seventies cars were very square and boxy, nowadays at least car designers/manufactures appear to be trying to be different and push the boundries - cars like the Fiat Multipla and Smart roadster are evidence of this.

I think all of the Skylines will become Retro cool as will the 350z, also the two latest Micras I can see probably going the same way for some reason.

Ford Probe and Vauxhall Calibras will become the assume the Capri/Manta spot.
RS Focus will become desirable as will Mk 4/5 RS Escorts.
Pug 106 XSi's will take on the 205GTI mantle.
Rav4 will be the quirky but wanted jeep type retro ride ala Moke.
