i am looking for a new motor!!!! I have been driving the manta for 2 1/2 years now as my main car (15000 miles a year) and i think its time for something newer. I am sick of making it nice all summer then killing it all winter. Thinking about it now it was a silly idea as vauxhall/opel are known for rotting So i want something a bit newer. That dosent rot as much Still classed as Retro Fun to drive Not to small And that i can afford to run daily I am struggling to come up with an answer Closest i get is VW Corrado 1.8/2.0 or nissan 200sx for the fun factor PLease help as i if don't get a retro motor Tonycocacola will stop talking to me Thanks

pick up a 'rocco for hardly anything - locally there was one in Clipstone, an F reg in apparently really tidy nick, for £300. Mk1 Golf style for Mk2 Golf money i've just done nottingham -> santapod -> nottingham including a run out to tesco on less than half a tank. put £35 in it last week, done over 300 miles and it's still got some to go. corrados aren't that cheap to run, the 1.8 especially needs a bit of a thrashing to get decent performance as it's quite heavy so they drink it a bit.

can i suggest, skoda favorit boring? No, great fun with that easily tunable 1300cc motor expensive? no cheap to run/mantain? YES economical? yes practical? yes i'd say go for an earlier carb one, as they get more boring with the injection, etc. or there is the felicia, which is the same car, but heavier, but it does have more modern gadgets and gizmos.... then there is the octavia

I like Corrados - definitely set to follow the Scirocco in the classic stakes I reckon! What about something Italian? Alfa 164. Buy it for nada with a silky V6. Or a 155 - OK so it's a tarted up Tipo but again, with a sporty engine under the lid it could be fun. I really like the 155's angular design, and they look great lowered over some black or graphite five spoke alloys, BTCC stylee! Now where's Rev9 with his Volvo 940 suggestion?!

I see that none of you lot think that my 480 is a contender of newest retro machine... You can pick 'em up for free and even the 2 litre n/a version can pick up speed at a decent rate... At one point in the 80's they were so cool that they actually had to stop producing them to avert a new ice age. That is why you don't see many of 'em about... Ours returns about 36+ mpg, on mainly motorway work, has reached 45mpg on a long boring run and dipped to 32 after a few weeks in town, but apart from the comedy headlights and the digital dash, it is a sturdy, quick, reasonably handling old barge that can charge past a ton, no worries! (apart from the wind noise from around the doors... ) BB

There are loads of modernish-classics you could go for, Capris, Maestro turbos, 200SXs, Volvo 480s, sportier RWD Volvos, any 80s/early 90s SAABs, Skoda Rapids, all of them sound good to me but that's just my opinion, I reckon there aren't many of them that are going to be in totally mint condition but what classics are?
