Okay, I'm finally getting my licence - just turned 21 and, although I've been a car nut since I was old enough to sit on my dad's knee and steer a mkII scrote 'round a field, I turned 17 and realised I didn't have the time/need to learn to drive - I was travelling 140 miles/day to college and back (and working from 5pm-11pm mon-fri then 14 hours plus at weekends).
Then I moved to Newcastle and, to be honest, the public transport here is fantastic. I can get to work in 20 minutes when it would take 40 minutes to drive in...then find a parking space (60 quid a month at least).
Now, I'm 21 and about to take an intensive course to get my licence - I know how to drive (score 1 for hooning round in fields/minicross), I just need to learn the whole 'driving around others without leaning on them to go round corners and/or mounting curbs to induce a slide' thing.
Unfortunately, I can't find anything that will give me insurance of less than 1200 sheets for a year. Ouch.
So I look to you guys:
Does anyone know of any insurance companies that will give a newly-qualified 21 year old (with pass plus) a decent quote on something nicely retro?
I know some places require you to be 25 for classic insurance. Do any do it for younger people?
If anyone knows of an insurance company that gives mega wads of discount for being in an owners club, I'd happily join.
Car-wise, I'm not too fussed as long as it isn't modern, is relatively interesting and can be picked up for 500-700 quid. Looking to buy in about 3-4 months time.
So...Any car/company ideas?
Thanks.
