Great day out, had fun listening to Caterham owners bicking about Westfield owners, Westfield owners bicking about Locost etc etc... I spotted a retro rides T-shirt, and felt compelled to say hello to Impjumbo! Glad to have met you. Wayhay! The first odd car I spotted was this manic Datsun Cherry FII 120A coupe. Ford Anglia has potential A real one, not a kit! This was a sportshatch Manta. Reliant Fox I have a current obsession with Quattro's. I loved them as a kid. Ford Escort I Alfa GTV Renault A610 Lovely RS2000 mmmmm! This was a kit, quite convincing too. Wierdy Renault thing. It has R5 rear lights too, but love the colour! The original kit car. This Lotus Europa was powerful. V8 Shelby lump instead of the original 1647cc as used by the Renault 16. Another childhood hero the VW engined Nova. I want this manx soooo much! The only piccy of a caterham I took....and very nice too! Apologies for the low jpeg resolution - I figured this would help modem users download images quicker. David, I can send you higher resolution images if you like for the gallery.....

Some pretty cool stuff there! I'm not the worlds greatest kit car fan but some of those GRP delights are... well, delightful! The GT40 Rep just looks great!
Also loving the "rat" escort estate. Reckon I'll be needing some black and silver plates for mine!

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Some interesting bits n' bobs there,
Thanks for the comments guys.
Most of the cars I photographed were due to scouting through the car parks. The show itself was not necessarily my thing, but you have to admire the commitment and effort put into the kit cars. Mind you there were some real horrors. I chose not to take pictures of the Rover 100 headlamped midas' or the sickly looking MR2 based Ferrari. I reckon there must have been over 50 different companies and some 400 cars - caterham and westfield taken up the bulk of that.
I would have quite happily taken home the Manx beach buggy or Chesil Porsche speedster.

Yup, that's Brian Gomm's incredible Imp. He started by hacking the front wings and front panel off as they were going rusty and then ordered a complete grp front end from Smith and Deakin plus a grp bonnet. He then realised how structural the front of an Imp is...
So he designed his own roll cage that he welded up himself, made up triangulation brackets and a strut brace for the front to hold all that true... and then had the whole lot powder coated silver. Sweeeet!!!
The front end is only there now as cloaking and is held on by some cleverly engineered fixings meaning that the front end can be removed for rust proofing of the remaining metal work, suspension changes etc. The front alloy spoiler is not only aerodynamic but it holds the front end on!!!
The interior metalwork has been drilled and lightened and it has minimalist trim with a couple of kevlar seats plus a home-spun alcantara dash (with white dials, natch!!).
He did the paint himself in twopack - and I defy anyone to get a better finish even from a bodyshop!
Engine was a 930 lump while his 1040cc full house unit was being rebuilt... it should fly, as from what I understand, it now weighs about the same as a Davrian (or maybe even less).
The best thing about it was it won best modded at Imp40 (two years ago) and very few people even noticed that the front end was GRP - in fact one guy didn't believe me when I told him, so Brian showed him the inside of the front panels - he's left the strands showing, but painted. Nice touch!!!
Its been in Practical Classics plus Impressions (Imp Club's mag). Should have gone in either PPC or Retro Car, really...
Cooler than an Eskimo's plums mate, and no mistake!

Just cos something is good for you doesn't mean its good for everyone - for example Marmite does not make good Dog Food.

The half built MR2 based Ferrari replica was enough to put me off kit-cars for ever!! Adam Some interesting bits n' bobs there, Thanks for the comments guys. Didn't know the Caterham came with twin passenger airbags.... sorry.....
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Good to meet you too Datsuncherry. I always enjoy the Kitcar show but do get sick of the various 7s. Apart from Locosts of course. There was a few Imp engined cars Clans, Ginetta G15s, and a Davrian. Brian Gomms Imp looked as fantasic as ever. I'm told there was a 240 BHP MK1 Mini aswell but i didnt see it

Haha we were parked just across the line from that Datsun! I was lucky enough to have been parked behind it! I used my 106 Rallye that day. Datsuns on axle stands. Datsuncherry its ImpJimbo not ImpJumbo sorry ImpJimbo... see what I might been advocating.... My typing skills is piis poor. The Jazz band was most surreal. Were they trying to capture austerity and gloom? I really liked the Fiat 126 based 500 buggy. Can you remember what it is called?
