A friend of mine mentioned that the govt were thinking of making it compulsory to have all work carried out on cars and bikes done by approved mechanics only, thus rendering all home DIY work illegal. This was in MCN apparently.
They decided to wait until AFTER the election to mention it though!
Anyone heard about this. Talk about criminalising th ewhole population. Oh and it's a stupid idea too!

Hasn't something similar happened with houshold electrics? Where you can barely change a plug or a light bulb without having to call in an electrician. Don't know much about it as i'm not a home owner.
But, yes, the thought of this does worry me a lot. Although i can definitely see it going this way eventually, someone starts taking about a home mechanic doing his own brakes and if he's doing it safely - because obviously the monkey down at the local tyres/exhausts/brakes place on a friday afternoon is massively concerned that your car is 100% safe (no offence to anyone who works in one of these places, as i imagine some of you actually do give a f*ck)

This plan would make many repairs uneconomical, thus our beloved old cars would need to be scrapped..........

Errrmmmm.... and how do they propose they enforce that? Ban spanners maybe? That's the most ridiculous idea I've heard in a long time, and god help us all if they're seriously considering it! The only way I can see it happening is if the MOT guy notes absolutely everything on the car (part numbers, the lot), and then re-checks it at the next test. This should ensure that the average MOT will take approximately 10 hours to complete. "MOT? Yep, that'll be £420 plus vat mate. *sniff*"

exactly, another reason why the government would be all for it
maybe it would be hard to stop someone from doing stuff to their own car completely, but it wouldn't be too hard to ensure all cars had a proper garage stamped service history

I've searched and searched on MCN on it's news and its fora, but there is not a word of it on there. A lot about the ID scheme and generally about bikers getting ripped off for toll roads and the like, but nothing about this Does anyone have a link? BB

What with the horrendous tax on petrol and road tax (I also have a toll road by my house I have to pay to use !), speed cameras, congestion charges, bus lanes, 2+ lanes etc etc I get the impression this government really don`t like cars !! At least the Tories are rolling on the classic car tax exemption and putting up the speed limit on m/ways to 80 ;D

It'd bankrupt all the parts suppliers/motor factors too, and make a huge impact on Halfords... Can't see it happening to be honest.

this is the best conspiracy thery I have heard for some time. Think of the practicalities, the inspectors would have to have photographic evidence of the position of every nut and bolt in an entire car! The whole idea of doing diy repairs is to have the finished product look unmolested isn't it? Modifications on the other hand are a bit easier to spot. Not to mention the wifes/partners of a nation up in arms because their nearest and dearest is inside the house under foot instead of out in the garage playing with their car where he/she should be.

yeah they've recently introduced something where you've got to have any wiring work in either a bathroom or kitchen inspected by an electrician. Otherwise it can void your insurance. People buying houses should be shown certificates for any recent (since January I think) work carried out. Although quite how anyone could prove it was done years ago I don't know?!?
I could see why this government would want to ban DIY car work since they obviously hate motorists & especially hate older cars but I really don't think it's enforcable.

I can't see this being real. It's gotta be a p!sstake. Not even the mithering do-gooders of the current government would be so stupid as to entertain this idea, surely! Plus, as mentioned, it would destroy a massive chunk of the UK motor industry. I know Bliar seems to want to kill off British manufacturing, but I think this is just silly scaremongering

I'm a trained mechanic so I don't see how they could enforce it on me. hehe, just do a mechanics course, then you can shove the certificate under thier noses and tell them to go forth and multiply ;D Like they could tell who worked on the car anyway

[sarcastic tone] i think that this is a brilliant idea, vw still making parts for type 4s and all[/sarcastic tone]
how stupid is this.how many times have you had to "put right" repairs carried out by so called professionals? take gavin j (i think) for example.professional experts messed his mg up which he had to fix himself.
to quote malcolm x
"i believe there will ultimately be a clash between the oppressed and those doing the oppressing. i believe there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice and equallity for everyone and those who want to continue the system of exploitation. i believe that there will be that kind of clash, but i don't think it will be based on the colour of the skin"
don't think he was talking about new labours policies on classic cars, but how right was he.he saw it coming 4 decades ago. if its true something must be done.

they police the home electrics thing by changing the colour of wires available. i don't belive this is a pisstake, this is what pisses me off when people want to vote labour really, just curse word like this, watch 1984 this country becomes more and more like it everyday. well if it happens i shall do what ever i want I'm sick of curse word government thinking they can tell me what to do, il fight fire with fire, il use their beloved human rights against them if they are going to make it part of this society. so best thing to do is even though its probably true, just ignore it and do what the hell you want.

It was a side panel snippit in teh classic bikes section of this weeks MCN. It's just another piece of intrusive, nosey, controlling legislation. What with digital speed cameras set to track your movements around the Uk via your number plate, cell phone companies desperate to tell the police where your phone was, e-mails stored for 25 years on govt computers, MOT, tax and insurance databases linking up, ID cards etc etc etc. To tell you the truth, when i stop to think about it it scares me. I don't actually WANT the govt to know every tiny thing about my life. Especially as much of it is designed to make it easier to sell me things! I tell you in 10 years time you won't recognise this counrty.

The way I see it, legislation only works with the consent and compliance of the general public. They might be able to prosecute a few hundred people for violating whatever law they've concocted, but if tens of thousands ignore it, they're fooked. It's just getting enough people not to comply "en masse" that's the trouble.
They can take my spanners from me... from my cold dead hands!! To paraphrase Charlton Heston ;D
