What with all the track days etc going on now it's difficult to see past the hype and the mass adoption of Toyo R888's as the holy grail of track tyres.
I'm going to be slapping a set of tyres on the ZS next week and I'd like more than this to go on. The only other brand that seems to get a look in besides the all conquering Toyo's are Advan's.
Any thoughts comments before I shed my load over a set?

Slicks and wets Find some cheapy steels and for £10 a tyre you can have 160/530 13 michelin slicks with minimal use.

Now that's an idea. Would need to find another set of 6" Amils as the wheel choice for the ZS is limited to say the least but a great idea.
Ideal wheel size for the ZS is 185/60 13 which is quite common for track use I think.

Stacks of 185-60-13 tyres around, you'd be had pushed to get a wheel that size though

Stacks of 185-60-13 tyres around, you'd be had pushed to get a wheel that size though I know. It's the pcd that doesn't help. The ZS is three studs (3x110) but different from the Saxo/AX/205 three stud pattern, AND the renault 3 stud pattern so choice is er limited. Sets of Amils are available in france but shipping is costly. Hence the original plan of road legal track tyres and the original question.

Road legal track tyres are really pointless. They're good as long as its sunny and warm, but when it rains they're dangerous.

I seem to recall reading a Renault 5 Turbo group test in Retro Cars, PPC or similar a few years back where a few of them ran F3(?) wets and slicks at track days - £10 a corner and they lasted fine.

Matt Nope - you just have to drive slower and expect less grip Whats the point though it rains over here so much i'd rather have a proper tyre that works all the time. A few of the old Clio club were on R888s when I was on goodyear eagle f1s. In the dry there wasn't enough difference to make my car slower round corners, but in the wet they all had to drive like grannys for fear of needing to do an emergency stop (which they couldn't as the ABS kicked in and didn't apply the brakes at all). Matt Up until you get standing water, and if you can get & Keep heat in them, there is nothing wrong with Trackday tyres.... Most people back off with them when it rains, temp goes down, grip reduces because of reduced temp..... It slides, they back off more and so the game continiues You have to work them..... if you push into a corner and they slide you have to push harder next corner - it works the tyre and gets heat into it, if you back off you will never get them warm enough....... If you had seen the conditions today and the totally shot (As in through to the canvas shot) trackday tyres that people were hammering round on you would change your mind...... ;D

we sell loads of R888, they are an excellent track tyre, but they don't last long. one of our customers tracks his 350brake cossie regular, set of rims that just see track use, and they wont see 2 track days out!

If you had seen the conditions today and the totally shot (As in through to the canvas shot) trackday tyres that people were hammering round on you would change your mind...... ;D Mine weren't that bad ;D Anticlockwise track Drivers side front Drivers side rear Passenger side front Passeger side rear At one stage today the track had a heck of a lot of standing water - sure the car was twitchy but I was lapping at similar speeds as in the dry and just had to be a little gentler on the gas out of the corners
