I gave the merc a wash and went round with some white hammerite dabing the stone chips and rusty bits, it looks ok now from about 10m away. Then i went a bit mad and painted the off side sill. Even though its obviously a different colour I still don't think it would look that good in the same colour as the body, rather than visually lowering the car it just seems to make it look slab sided. I thik i'll go out tomorrow and get a tin of black.  |

I'd go with the black too. I think it's the fairly heavy black trim along the bottom.
Pillarless windows are still cool though.

I like it. Furthermore, I think it needs it - the glass area seems to be the same height as the body. Painting the sill black will over-balance it, make the glass area appear bigger and consequently make it look like one of the cars you see in Viz.

I like that better! - I think you should see how it looks after living with it for a few days, as I reckon it just jolts your eyes because you're so familiar with them being black.  |

Good advice there BenzBoy, but i'm going to have to do the near side white as well, having odd coloured sills would hurt my head. I have a bit of a thing for symmetry. It even pains me that theres only a steering wheel on one side!!  |

White would be OK if a perfect match but satin black is better. Cool car but you've got to "suit" it. I never did.

i'm not convinced, but i agree you should take a couple of days to learn to appreciate it!
i do think the sides go too far down now. takes some of sleekness away.

Did the same to mine a few years ago, and then binned the idea and repainted it dark grey.....the original colour isn´t black Mark ;D

I agree it looks better white (and correct white will be better still) But I don't think its just the huge black side strip - which either needs to come off or go white to improve the balance, I think it needs more defined sills. Now I never thought I'd say this about a lovely old car, but does anyone else think some plastic sill covers like all modern cars have work imrpove things? You know make the sills a bit taller, because I just think now the height of the sill is obvious, it looks too small for the rest of the car! I think a photoshop is in order to explain better - mebbe if I'm bored tonight! |

Looks to me like one of these cars where an old giffer owner has got started titivating it with a tin of white Dulux and then been unable to stop. I vote for black sills.
