At some point when I ever manage to scrape some cash together, my next proper purchase will hopefully be some sort of van for camping in. I had a VW Bay camper that was rotten beyond repair, and over the past years I've been watching the prices slowly creep up and up. For a long time now I've been wondering about alternatives, and this is a favourite - the Barkas B1000. Bigger than a bay, front engined and quite good looking IMO. And then there's this one: Which I think looks WAY COOL. Early ones were two stroke powered, however this site: home.clara.net/peterfrost/barkas.htmlsays that of the later ones "towards the end of it's production life a new version was produced using a 1300cc 4 cylinder 4 stroke engine. The new engine was again based on a Wartburg item, this engine being a licence built derivation of the unit to the VW Golf and Polo." Now, derived from the VW Polo 1300 lump? Are you ahead of me? wonder if a G40 lump would bolt straight (ish) in... Anyone know?

Barkases are brilliant! Go for it! Wartburg based incidentally, just in case you have trouble getting bits for it, and as you say you can't go wrong with a hot VW engine! Another place you might find a little info on them, and the Wartburgs they're based on, is www.autosoviet.altervista.org, it's also good for pictures if you want to photoshop any eastern bloc classics, I reckon if you're looking for a Wartburg, look for an ex-ambulance. Perfect for the job at hand, since it'll likely come ready with cupboards and other storage, and room for a bed (well they do accomodate stretchers!), plus their electrical system can often accomodate the lighting and electrical additions you might want to put in, since the medical equipment they'd have had stowed in them will likely use more juice than your kettle! (You see there are two reasons I know too much about messing about with ambulances, a- I'm a member of St Andrews Ambulance Corps, so I've got a bit of experience with our Sherpa Ambulance that sees a fair bit of use and often needs running repairs, plus we use it as a mobile headquarters when we're covering concerts (I'm going to be part of the first aid cover at an REM concert in a few weeks, which is nice, if it makes it onto the telly look out for a skinny, hairy guy in blue overalls! ) so we often use it's electrical systems for such strenous tasks as boiling the kettle! ;D ;D) and b- my health's exceptionally bad so I spend a lot of time in the back of ambulances! ) Here's a good example of a Barkas ambulance!
