This is an old thread. The fresh, new, exciting thread with 25% more rust and 100% more progress can be found HERE!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is an old readers rides thread about this car but it's all based around a V8 that I was going to shoehorn in. Since that's been... mothballed... I thought I'd start a new one. Plus I can't be assed trawling through millions of pages to find it... ;D I'll start with a brief history... This is about 6 months after I got the car, in 2002. Looking grotty and full of filler. Not many pics of this era as I had yet to enter the digital age, camera wise. ^ I stripped it down, cut the rust out and fitted new wings. ^ Pretty! Then I got the modding bug... ^ Tasty 16x8.5 alloys freshly re-furbed. ^ Toyota Supra leather seats ^ Chopped the front springs a lil bit and rolled like that for a while... ...Until I demolished a new Corsa with it... It sat there all forlorn until I got on with hammering out the dents and taking the opportunity to give it a satin black rattle-can paintjob while I was about it! I soon tired of altitude sickness, so slammed the living bejeezus out of it before RR07... ^ Sierra lowering springs on the rear ensure I'm on the bumpstops! ^ Merciless chopping of the front springs achieves this! Then I got these reverse-rim wheels from fellow RR'er Dez... ^ Calipers required... tickling... for the valves to clear... ^ Sitting pretty!

What cross spoke alloys are they? They look very much like Carlton wheels.

What cross spoke alloys are they? They look very much like Carlton wheels. They're by Fondmetal. I got them from a guy who had them on his W126 S-Class. They're too wide to fit on my car now it's slammed! ;D

The other day, my trusty, rusty Benz's odometer rolled over to 00000... In order to mark this auspicious occasion, I decided to rip the car apart! I have an MOT looming and I wanted to sort out a few bits of welding on the chassis. ^ Hmmm, bit crusty. Time for a closer look... ^ ARGH! Oh dear. Worse than I thought... ^ OH HAI 2 U MR FLOOR! Ar$ebiscuits. The sound deadening on the bulkhead has acted like a poultice, soaking up water and rotting the steel away behind it. The bitumen on the floor is cracked and held moisture, rotting the floor. There was a lovely bit of steel stuck over the hole with sealer. Horrid. But it does not end there, oh no no no... ^ Time to take off the wing, so I start stripping her down... ^ Now the dog can see the rabbit. Although... ^ The wing is further gone than I thought! I like the rusty patina it's gained but behind the scenes has turned into a grot-fest. Still gonna try to save it I think... ^ Sill end has gone too. This is an easy one though (famous last words...) ^ Holy Bulkhead, Batman! Time to get all that underseal off and reveal the extent of the damage... ^ My weapon of chice. Chomps through all that rubbery bullet-proof MB underseal in no time! ^ Ugh. Horrific! But, the inner wing to bulkhead seam is fairly rust-free. This is good as these cars like to rot there. ^ But what's this? Hmm, looks a bit scabby... well, might as well take the whole inner wing down to the metal and do a nice job... ^ Noooo! When is this going to end?! ^ Yeh. Whatever. Bring it on. So... tomorrow I will be making patterns and panels, cutting the sh!t out and welding in new steel, providing the weather holds. I reckon I've uncovered all the grot from this area now, so hopefully there will be no nasty surprises. The chassis rails are alright, so that's something at least. I hate old cars.

So, un-deterred by the MASSIVE amount of rust, I began chopping, grinding and welding... ^ That's coming off for a start... The box section I had was too small diameter, so I thought I'd make my own... ^ Bit of 2x2 looks about right... ^ Screw some steel to the wood... ^ Hammer it round... ^ Weld it together ^ Trim it off... ^ One new front outrigger end with bumper mount! ^ Who is this? Why, it's brother Street! Sorry I dragged him away from Project Family Dragster, but the welder was playing silly beggars and he's better at it than me. ^ Good as new... Now that I have something to weld to, it's time for the inner wing. ^ Made a pattern and cut out the steel ^ Offered it up ^ Ugh! Look at that grot! That's coming out... ^ Nice big hole... ^ New stuff tacked in place. The next piece of inner wing was pretty tricky - lots of curves and bends. I could have made it in several pieces, but I want to do a neat job and didn't want a patchwork quilt effect. So I thought I'd try panel beating a complete section. ^ I've made a start. Notice all the highly technical markings which by the time I got to the workbench, I'd forgotten what they meant... ^ Bit more persuasion with the hammer, and my knee... ^ Nearly there... ^ That's it. Offers up nicely to the original. ^ So, out with the old... ^ And in with the new. Fitted really nicely, and it's all tacked in place . ^ Made the last part of the inner wing this afternoon, and tacked that on too. There were a couple of bits of rot on the inner wing tops where the wing bolts on, so that was cut out and new bits made up and tacked in. So, it's all ready for seam welding, grinding back, sealing and painting... ;D

They're still on my car! Only on the back though - they wouldn't fit under the arches at the front so I've got stock smooth 14in steels there. In other news...Got a NOS wing for £20 off eBay! It's for the near side, but I dare say it'll need replacing anyway...

Thanks guys! To be honest, I just jump right in and have a go. That's the first bit of panel beating I've ever done. ;D thats alot fo steel for £20!!! not to ask a stupid question but have u got alot more to do on this??? The other side is an unknown quantity, I really hope it isn't as bad as the driver's side! Today I'm doing the floor and bulkhead on the O/S, and the sill if I have time. The rear inner wings need some rust chopping out, but again I won't know how much until I get all the underseal off there. The way I see it, it can all be cut out and replaced! It's just a matter of how long it'll take.

In my experiance most old cars are worse on the passenger side, i guess it might be cos theres more water/grit/curse word on that side to get thrown up at the underneath, top work so far though.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Good work leaping in so quickly! You've inspired me to hack bits of wing off to make repairing underneath easier - I wish my wings un-bolted!
