Heres a project I have been working on for some time........ The plan is to sprint and track day it but the main aim is to do a few races in the SEMSEC saloon series at Brands Hatch and Lydden maybe this year................. Car is a 85 abarth bought along with a grey example a few years ago, the grey one was supposed to be a easy 'get through the mot' but proved to be another resto project! anyway I got the grey one sorted used it for a bit then sold it to finance this one, which didnt quite work out as planned (does it ever) I also work on customers cars (mlmotorsport.com) so time is always an issue plus I built myself a mini minus kitcar and numerous other smaller projects along the way! I moved to a new workshop last year and at last the strada could live inside the last year as seen more progress than ever before! The car had been stripped out and an OMP cage fitted, badly as it turned out! we removed the cage and started with making up proper 4mm steel feet for the cage to sit on The only serious rot was the front of the roof which dissapeared as the screen came out which cracked as well! luckily I bought a 5 door spares car which gave up its roof section and screen which promptly cracked while in storage! I stripped out the heater and dash and was amazed at the space! the A series head was a 'paper weight' while I rebuilt the head, the box was shagged so a brand new one was sourced from italy for a little over £200 (ebay bargain) Ive tried to keep the budget sensible and the beauty of it taking so long is that bargains do come up the wilwood calipers where another ebay find at £150 the conversion kit was got from an abarth specialist along with a freeflow exhaust as part of a swap for unwanted parts on the car so its very much on budget, until I buy the carbs, seats, harness etc etc! Suspension has been rebushed, lowered springs front and uprated lowered rear spring, still need to fit the latter and sort the rear brakes, made a bit of progress this year but keep finding more jobs to do, Like making up a new engine top steady to replace the spindly std ones. More later

Brilliant! Your roof repair is inspired.
Are the gearboxes in these special? I'm sure i remember reading something about them being rare and fragile, cant remember where though. What would be the implications of trying to fit a box from a Delta HF or a Croma or something?

Yes the abarth had a ZF close ratio box but they are fragile, this wasnt helped by fiat dealers reccomending engine oil in the gearbox! I did consider having a go at using a different box but the new ZF one came up at a good price, I did a bit of research with a couple of oil companies and Millers have come up with one that should help look after the box, I'm glad I did it this way as the original abarth ratios really suit track work.

looks good so far! bit of a battle with the rot round the windscreen though!
couple of q's
whats the engine sat in there? looks a bit like a naked alfa romeo 16v similar to the 2.0 cloverleaf unit used in 145's?
and what wheels are they? really like them!

The engines the original to this car 2 litre 8 valve twincam, its a fiat/lancia bottom end so they used it in a lot of different models.
The 130 came with sidedraught 40 solex or webers as standard, steel freeflow exhaust manifold and electronic timing control similar to the megajolt setup but not adjustable, Id like to try this on it as we have seen great improvements on all sorts of cars.
In strada trim they give around 130bhp but I have seen 140 from a well tuned std one on 40s. This one has a large port head, and different cams, combined with 45s it should be an improvement.
Wheels are strada 130tc as well puny 5.5 x 14 but suit the car well,

Thanks mate! My personal opinion is the Strada 130tc is THE hardest hot hatch ever made...... This was my first note bracket on number plate for timing strut.. for sprinting. I got this one with the red racer and for a time I had an abarth daily driver and racecar in the garage! Both stank of fuel and damp, the seats hurt my ass and they rot like you wouldnt believe, at the time I had a 30 mile drive a day to work, and I wouldnt trade the experience! On the other hand................I also have a weakness for brooklands green! The rover is a really good everyday driver and I love the red leather, the minus is my company show car for the minis we do, both are great to drive, but I am really really really looking forward to driving the strada, the trick on this one is how ever long it takes as I intend to keep it forever!

Its a long time since i've seen one of these. Always liked them because they are rare even when new, and the monster seats the were fitted were brilliant.

Now known as the Ritmo! (I got a genuine Ritmo130TC bootbadge!)
Had a sucessful debut year in 2014 with it, sprints at crystal palace and brighton speed trials, trackdays at brandshatch, visits to bromely pageant and the oh sop retro show it was great to finally drive this twin cam 30 year old hot hatch! and a few pics in retro cars mag at their track day.
2015 started well with crystal palace sprint but grew a little frustrated with lack of power and handling against the other sprinters although the classes at the palace don't really give the modest equipped cars a chance.
The retro cars track day was 50 laps of fun ended by a engine blow up!

Bit of everything really, it has to go in the modded class of course and with the A048R tyres(could go in the stock class if i changed them, but wanted them on the car!)
So last time out I was up against a caterham, a Mk2 escort cosworth race car on slicks etc etc
The saxos etc do go well in their class too, ive always built a car how i wanted and just fitted into a class, next time i plan to do it the other way round!

Nice. Never had a Strada but loads of the corporate siblings, 131, 124, 128 Etc. When I saw the cylinder head in the first post I thought what hell is that? They must have sold a down market version with some East Block engine

Nice to see this again and finished too Just to say the corvette ZR1 box I run in my LC has engine oil in as std so it's not that unusual (it is however built like a brick sh!thouse so can probably cope)
