As promised in the other forum, here it is: I'm signed off work at the moment, and after sleeping for what was close to two days solid, I've managed to restart on my mk2. Since the last post, I've dropped the rear beam out and made a start cleaning it up. How it's looking now: Beam just out: The body mounts were an absolute mess, so they've been wire brushed, primed and repainted with black smoothrite, look umpteen times better! Had the rear shocks out too, gave them a clean up and replaced the top mounts with Prothane jobbies from eBay: Rear axle stripped and ready for wire brushing, priming and painting: My mate Dan (who's trying to become a member of this site, any chance, mods?) was around at the weekend too and his daughter was loving this cardboard box. So naturally we taped it up - with her in it - and took it outside to place on the rooves of the Golfs and his 2-door ABFd Jetta: A good time was had by all, especially when Dan mentioned that he knew of an early mk2 GTI going for free... a plan was hatched, my neighbour willing to pick it up, except there's a lightweight on his car trailer. No problem say I, just plonk it in our field! So he did. A few hours later, this was home: And I've no idea what to do with it. The idea of cleaning it up and selling it as a rolling shell on eBay appeals. The floors are shot in the front, both doors and wings are gubbed too and there's a bit of filler cap grot. It has the early style instrument cluster and MFA though, a spotless interior somehow, and a recently reconditioned engine. All the K-Jet solid pipes are gubbed though, so it doesn't want to run!   Answers on a postcard... Anyways, bit more progress today - got the rear beam painted: And my rear callipers too. Flash Red, natch. So with these bushes: I'll have a lovely gloss black/primary colour combination underneath!

Done some more work and collecting of bits in the past week or so, starting to come together at last! Finally got my rear axle back together and painted, just waiting on Volkswagen getting in new rear calliper bolts and the plastic clips for the brake lines, also wish I could find a supplier of polybushes for the bottom of the rear struts but to no avail. Cleaned up my spare subframe and gave that a coat of black smoothrite too - fitted my Eibach front ARB which has been sitting in my shed forever, as well as my wider Passat wishbones: Unfortunately, the ARB is too fat for these normal Golf-sized drop link bushes, so I'm gonna have to get them back out and drill out the centres by a couple of mm. No matter, it's no biggie and I'll do it soon enough. Still need to pick up some bushes from diggerbucket, hopefully do it this weekend! Anyways, picked up something else at the end of last week, and it's lurking behind here... It's a completely complete 2 litre ABK engine with 120k on the clock. It came from an automatic Audi 80 which was dark blue, so according to my impeccable logic that that's the sort of car owned by old people and old people alone, it's unlikely to have been thrashed. Certainly seems to have good compression. Pretty much complete including the starter motor, almost seems a shame that I only want to use the bottom end. Cost me all of £40. Intend on building it up on the aforemention subframe, possibly with a Passat gearbox so I can get a hydraulic clutch. Certainly makes some sort of sense since I have Passat wishbones and driveshafts already...

Made a little more progress to the GTI in the past few days, nothing to get too excited about though! Started stripping down that £40 ABK motor to hopefully get the block painted. Annoyingly, the cup on the grinder's wire brush attachment kept coming loose so didn't get the block as cleaned up as I'd like, and it's a curse word day today, so I'm unlikely to get it done today either. Still, here's a whole pile of redundant Audi 80-specific parts which I don't need! They'll be going on eBay soon enough, along with this head, possibly the pristinest (it's my word, I invented it) head I've ever seen. Makes me think the car got scrapped down to a dodgy slushbox because the engine's just perfect! Rubbed down one of my G60 wings too, with the intention of fitting it up at some point yesterday. Painted it up, rubbed down between coats, lacquered, dried, fitted up the arch and a Hella Pyramid - yet another excellent scrappy find. Looks quite good, don't you think? I did too until I offered it up for fitting. I'm gonna kill my paint supplier, it's about 4 shades too light. Still, you've got to laugh and I guess this is all part of the fun of rebuilding a car! Finally! My new brake line clips and rear calliper bolts have arrived - along with the revelation that VAG have given up with 7mm allen-headed bolts for brake components. Good. Was at a roup the other day and came back with a couple of goodies - namely a huge workbench made out of railway sleepers and some hardcore steel plate and a DeWalt 110v grinder. For less than a ton the pair. Happy days! So this morning I got to rebuilding my rear axle with the hope of getting the car back on all four wheels by the end of the day. We'll see... Next time you're in the scrappies, keep an eye out for these - Pug 306 flexi-hose-tensioner-type-things. Stainless steel and easily pocketable. 8) Got one side built up with my Goodridge flexis and new pads: Now, will I manage the other side by the end of the day?

Well this weekend I managed to get a bit more done to *project 1908*, decided I'd finish off the brake lines, and whack in a flexi support when I found one. Made a bit of an of the line which does a sort of 's' shape on the passenger side, so was determined to make a proper job on the other side. A vice handle makes for an excellent former, as you can see! Fitted up the axle on my own with the help of a couple of trolley jacks. That's a curse word of a job and one I have no wish to repeat. Someone to help would have been a massive bonus but at least I can say I did it on my own. Changed a gearbox on my own as well, working up to an engine by the looks of things. After it being up on axle stands for so long I'd forgotten just how low it sits. Looks brilliant! It'll look a lot better when the front wing and all the G60 arches are on though! It also has no brakes at the moment as I need to remake a few copper lines. While I'm doing that I figured I may as well change the master cylinder for my 22mm one and my front brakes for 256s. And if I'm doing that, well, I might as well complete the widetrack conversion. But since I've built that up on another subframe... you can see where this is going.

Got some half decent weather yesterday so decided I'd get started on getting the engine out. That'll be easy, just remove the front bumper, front panel, loosen a few bolts, stanley knife through flexis and roll the curse word out thinks I. Errrrm, no... Started off easy enough taking the grille off: And then the front panel came out in a few bits, which is when the alarm bells started ringing: Anyone realise what's missing here? And then a couple of captive nuts decided to not be captive anymore, and one of the bolts sheared too. Cue much swearing, futile attempts with molegrips, long chisels, more swearing when I realised that I'd given my neighbour his transformer back and he was out, so the grinder wasn't an option either. curse word. I've got some spare bumper irons though, so chiselling ensued: And eventually: Not a happy bunny by this point, I was exceedingly unhappy at the state of the chassis rails. The front couple of inches are... crusty. And then I gave the matter some thought. It's a 16 year old car. Everyone knows Volkswagen skimped with the '90 specs GTIs. If it was a 16 year old Ford? I'd be jumping for joy that that was the only tinworm! So I'll be cutting the mint chassis rails off that '85 model and welding them on instead. And sod it, I'll seam weld all the way along. Not so bad afterall! So here's how it's sitting now: It looks mean like that, the G60 wings look ace and the Passat wishbones will fill them up again. I'm kinda happy. 8)

It's been a while since I updated this thread! I've been busy as usual, but I've managed to get some stuff done... After the chassis leg/front bumper debarcle I just had to get ripped in about the beast, so found me some blue insulating tape, a black marker and cracked on again: All multiplugs labelled up: Bits starting to get removed: Most probably the easiest way to change a Golf's downpipe? The pistons were severely manky but otherwise good! No scoring of the bores, original honing marks still very much in evidence too - so the smoking was most likely the valve stem oil seals. Confirmed later when I took them off, they were an absolute mess.

ut of course I've done more since then, that was a few weeks back! Stripped down the manky head and carried out a bit of port matching with the Dremel, smoothed out the ports a bit as well as deburring and cleaning the combustion chambers: Noticed the head's severely less manky than before? That's all down to the 70° intensive cycle on my parts washer. The one in the kitchen. The head took about two hours to build back up, would've taken less time if I'd re-used my old valves but some of them were totally gunked up with carbon, and since the ones on that ABK head were the same size, and clean (!), I used them. Head built up with new-ish valves, combustion chambers clean and deburred! So anyways, I was at Glamis yesterday, and picked up this little lot for under £15. Figured it'd be daft to have that and keep my silver smoothrited block, so it's all coming off! Gonna do the exhaust manifold too. Not pictured is the brass wire brush wheel which brought the pistons up a treat! And here it is, sort of back together: Need to torque up the head bolts, then decide whether or not to re-use my standard cam or go for something hotter. I suppose I can change it easily enough in time. I'll probably repaint the cam cover as it's not the best job, and I'll have a look at the oil pump when I change the sump over but I'm sure it'll be fine! Off work again today but I'm supposed to be resting my ankle so I doubt I'll get anything done to it. Oh, and here's the state of my shed after the mass cleaning frenzy! Nice stencil has pride of place in the corner...

Tiny, tiny little update just to prove I'm still doing something. These babies came through in the post the other day: Front crossmember and PAS rack bushes, as mine were looking ever so slightly shot. Had a great time trying to put the bastarding things in! Hopefully I'll never have to do that job again. Looks quite good though: Told you it was a little update!

Another busy weekend but managed to get more work done on the Golf. Finally got the engine out after a lot of faffing about, split it from the gearbox and proceeded to strip the last few components off it... Removing the flywheel was easy enough: But the front pulley was having none of it. Even managed to bend one of my umpteen spare VW screwdrivers trying to jam the engine. Worked alright for the flywheel bolts though! After a good half hour arsing around and getting nowhere, rage took over, invoking superhuman strength. Or something. Because I didn't find it that difficult to lift up the engine by myself and jam it in my vice! Removed the sump, windage tray and oil pump: And was left with this: So has anyone guessed how I locked up the engine yet? Check it out! Worked well! Painted up the sump and it'll go on the 2 litre soon, probably tomorrow. Light was failing by then though, and we all know what a sump looks like anyways... Anyways, got a wee bit more done this evening, managed to drop the subframe and remove the PAS rack complete as I just know that if I disturbed any fittings they'd never seal again. Yes, I could get new pipes made up from Pirtek for about a tenner, but if I can save a tenner then why bother? So can anyone spot what's wrong with this picture? Yep, head snapped off one of the subframe bolts. I've soaked the remnants in WD40 and I'll get some heat on it too. Don't want to uncaptivise the captive nut in the chassis rail by battering f*ck out of it! So here's how it's looking now: And here's the pile of removedness! Oh, and a quick question. Anyone know why there's a random length of hollow pipe stuck in the rack bush and running the length of the rack?

So the last post showing any real progress was the one with the snapped wishbone bolt? Yow, just shows how long I've been meaning to update this thread! I got some heat on it that night and got it out, replaced it with one from the spare mk2. That thing's come in soooo handy, was well worth what I paid for it. I'd already built up the new subframe, so it was just a case of slotting it in. Working on my own as always meant it wasn't the simplest of jobs, but I found that a couple of old tyres underneath the wishbones brought the subframe up close enough that I could waggle it about a bit, get a jack underneath and get the rear wishbone bolts in. Once they were tightened up, I whipped the tyres out and remembered that there was no way on earth that the forward subframe bolts were gonna go in with the Passat wishbones. Except if you push down on them with the ARB detached, in which case they go in just fine. Job jobbed! Apart from the forgetting to bolt the column back to the rack. D'oh! I suspected that removing the dash and dropping the column would probably be easier than dropping the subframe again and lining it all up, so out came the 'rad dash. I needed to replace the headlight switch loom anyway, so no biggie. Except dropping the steering column isn't as easy as all that, because the pedal box needs to be unbolted too! Sack that, thinks me, who ends up dropping the subframe again! Thought this made a nice pic too - my old Shell car park pass saying that you should wear your seatbelt, switch off your phone and observe the speed limit. Next to an old EMPI sticker, warning that you shouldn't be lowering the windows at speeds in excess of 120mph. I always have a quick read over my previous posts before I update this thread and some throwaway comment struck my eye. The one about having changed a gearbox and a rear axle on my own and that I must be working up to an engine at this rate. Well. In all honesty, it isn't actually all that hard! All I had at my disposal was a few blocks of wood and my own brute force! I'd taken care to make sure that the rear engine mount bolts were close by, and I'd run a tap down the mount's threads after painting it so there shouldn't have been any problems there. Thankfully there weren't, and about twenty minutes later the engine was in! The pictures of the length of hardwood and the gas hose, well, they were taken after the event when I was trying to get more wooden blocks under the sump to take some strain off that rear mount! The engine should be sitting about here, there don't appear to be any problems down to the taller block but I guess I won't really know until it's in properly and has seen some road miles! Since then, I've decided that although the 'rad dash looked great, to get it all working properly was going to be a massive pain in the hoop and I just want the Golf back on the road! So it might go back in after our Malaysian adventure, but the proper dash has gone back in for just now. And I keep looking at it as I walk past and think to myself that in all honesty, it doesn't look too bad at all. I might even ditch the Polo GT wheel and put the proper GTI one back on! The mk3 GTI column stalks are staying though, because they're brilliant. Also, I've made a subtle modification to the rear - see if you can spot it and then tell me if you like it - because I'm not so sure!

So a quick picture update... Dash back in completely, electric mirrors in although I don't have the last bit of loom that goes to the fusebox! Gearbox back in, although I'm gonna have to drop it again to get that steel brace thing back on because I forgot about it being painted and sitting on the roof of the spare mk2... Engine built back up completely, radiator in and front panel painted and back on. It's almost looking like a car again! Today's tasks are a trip to Stan's for a passenger side driveshaft from a Passat, replace the coolant flange on the side of the head as it's warped, set the timing properly and connect up the back section of exhaust!

Been having a few niggles to iron out with the grey beast this past wee while, first off the brakes just refused to bleed. It was only when I saw all the fluid coming from the front passenger side that I realised something was very up. Tried tightening up the bleed nipple a bit more as it looked not quite right. It wouldn't tighten. Took it out to find the threads were stripped. Bunged a new one in, job done! There's still some air in the system but it's not the easiest job bleeding brakes on your own with just a length of hose! My indicators seem to have stopped working too - flipping them up or down, or turning on the hazards - makes the light on the dash light up, or the hazard switch, but they don't flash. Indeed, they don't actually do anything. Arming or disarming the alarm makes them flash as they should though! New column stalk? Figured I should do something else to take my mind off it, so broke out the machine polisher in the hope that careful application of some G10 would bring a bit of a desperately-needed shine back to the paint. Here's a 'before' pic: And here's some 'afters': Plus the obligatory reflection shots: Maybe, just maybe, it'll be MoTd this week. But I doubt it somehow.

I've finally managed to get the front end all back together. I know that shouldn't be difficult, however, neither of the front bumper irons I had were straight, which meant lots of curse word about trying to straighten them on and off the car! I've still not completely managed, which is why there's still a bolt missing on the driver's side of the front crossmember, which may also explain why the bumper isn't sitting quite as straight as it should. I still need to flatten the rear arch lips, which is why the skirts and rear arches aren't on properly, and I need to set the tracking too! Oh, and the headlamps are playing up too, but these are just wee niggles which I'll sort out soon enough. Anyways, just in time for winter, here's my wide, low and wholly inappropriate for anything other than dry weather mk2! More to come...

Just joined up today! Been lurking ages. Should be further on, but it's cold out there and I don't have a garage. However... Was in stan's a few weeks back and spotted a 1.9 TDI bottom end just sitting there. Cost me a whole twenty quid, not bad considering there was a brand new sump on it! But I digress. With some machining to my existing ABK block, I can use the diesel crank to take my 2 litre out to 2.1 ish. And I've now got all the bracketry to mount a diesel pump to that block, along with the bracketry to mount the alternator and PAS pump lower down. And I was thinking about what I could mount in place of that diesel pump. I'm sure you're following my thought train for winter engine builds, aren't you?

Thanks! I'll keep this thread updated with the new engine build which will hopefully happen over winter. Think it would have turned out much better if I had a garage, hopefully that'll happen next year! 2.1 Supercharged mk2 FTW.

Now that the weather's turned freezing, it's time to turn my attention to these badboys: Yes, they're BBS RS001s. Yes, they are in quite shocking condition - the attempt below to clean the lips up failed miserably so they'll get replaced. But I'm not overly worried. Why? Well, they were cheap. How cheap? Let's just say that next time you find a set of wheels at a car boot sale mid-afternoon, the seller won't want to be taking them back home. I never even attempted to haggle when he said twenty quid. ;D
