Hi all
i am after a bit help to come up with an answer to the almighty question
"What engine do i fit into the manta?"
It was a 2litre when i got it But it smoked more than i do (sorry DID) (i stopped at xmas) SO replaced it with a 2.2 Carlton motor (must add a thanks to tonycocacola in here for his help)
Now that motor is starting to get a bit tappy Still running quite well at the moment considering it does about 250 miles a week but it wont last forever (or much longer in fact)
So i want a replacement Ideal would be a nice XE redtop motor But ! they all atleast 11 years old and most of them flogged to death
So could go with the later ecotec motor but they only 136Bhp compared with the redtops 150ish ;D
but stand more chance of getting a good one as can pull one out of a vectra! Then spend a little more money and get it chipped
I'm sure there is other ideas out there But bear in mind i use this car every day
So lets see what you lot can come up with problems / ideas / suggestions
Thanks in advance
Mantamad

keep an eye out in the barrymags (max power, revs, fast car etc) for a smashed up nova with a red-top conversion... chances are it'll have been professionally fitted and rebuilt prior to being incarcerated in the poxy nova engine bay. you can probably pick up the entire car for less than the engine rebuild cost. make sure the barry driving lost it and hit something backwards though, natch. also you could probably even sell on the rest of the shell as a project - or just crush it for maximum grins

i think youve answered yer own question there ;D
ecotec - some mag somewhere compared them and they said even tho eco is slightly less powerful they're easier to tune
and how many ex copper omegas are there ;D
easier to fit that than zetec? same power

Theres plent of 2.0 litre omegas going through haverton hill for 100-150. It was about 95 they changed as all cavalier gsi`s and astra gsi`s had the redtop`s. The later sri`s ha dthe 16V engine as well but don't know if it was the same power. But I think there are two types of redtops arent there. The early coscasts and the later vauxhall ones. I cant remember which but one of them is prone to going porous.
You just missed a calibra turbo that went for £550 that would have been quite a laugh ;D ;D

Redtops are getting a bit pricey cos they're sought after BUT like the above have said, ex-filth Omegas are cheap and the rapid-response jobs might have been tweaked - they've probably been thrashed but at least you'll know they've been serviced regularly. What about a nice Senator 3.0 six-banger? You won't really need to tune it as it has plenty of torque, especially in a Manta shell!! ;D Pick one up for beer money, flog off the other bits and cube the shell. Jobs a good un!

Rover V8? I'm pretty sure there's a fitting kit available, and the rear axle should take the grunt.

pheonix c says that all astra gsi's are red tops. not true. late ones went eco tec. i've owned both. personally redtop on 1.8 manta box only way to go. get a late red top with the coil block not a dizzy, much easier to install.
v6 is a hunny, mileage completely irrelevant. no idea personally how big a job to fit though.
useless bit of info: gsi v6 is the same engine as normal 2.5 v6. the only difference is that the gsi had 3.0 omega cams.

Rover V8 yeah, technically still a vaux engine too and loads of torque 150 bhp standard for a 3500 there used to be a manta v8 register/owners club too, would love to see a blown one

as far as i know the engine was found by a rover man in a scrap area of a car plant while he was visiting gmc and thought to buy it for rover (tooling, copyrights etc) altho I'm not sure what the first car was that rover put it into possibly a p6 / land rover anyone know if this is correct? i cant remember where i heard or read it .
but yeah it is technically a vaux engine as i don't think rover made many significant changes and there have been people tuning them for 30/40 years in rover form

I read somewhere (think it was PPC or RC...) that the Americans developed that V8 but it was canned because they didn't think the US consumers would warm to new technology like the alu block and overall lightness of it. Then us limeys came over and said "What's that?" and took it back to Blighty to use in the P6 (think it was the P6 that used it first? Might be wrong on this )
