My brother checked the oil on our Mini yesterday. I have no idea what he was thinking he was doing but there's a trail of oil up the path and out onto the road where my Mum has taken it to work. I rang her, she checked the oil and it's up to the level of the top of the dipstick hole! Apparently it was jumping out of gear on the way to work too. How much damage is likely to have been done? I guess it leaks through onto the clutch?

I guess the crankcase pressure must have built up pretty high and the oil has been blown through the breathers and back into the carb.
Maybe the baulk rings have been clogged up with all the excess oil causing it to pop out of gear.
I reckon drain it out and fill it up to the mid-point level and check over all the breathers and see how it is.
Is the clutch slipping at all?

Ta...
Not sure if the clutch is slipping, I won't get to see the car for another few hours. Don't think so!

Doubt it will do much lasting harm to the gearbox it has quite a bit of oil in it anyway.
As you say clutch may be at risk if the oil seal fails. If the breathers are good then it should hold up.

Think you had a lucky escape, it must be smoking like a chimney though. If it had been a diesel engine you'd have known about it though ;D

Well, I drained it out and refilled to halfway between minimum and max. Surprisingly there wasn't any smoke, fingers crossed that we got away with it...
