Well you saw the pics earlyer in the week. After a good steam clean I moved the car into the workshop today for inspection (asking for trouble ) and a few repairs. On the to do list Remove any build up of crud still remaining after steam cleaning. Remove wings to inspect inners Seek out rust and repair Dinatrol inside the box sections and rusty looking bits Splurge 5L of waxyol on the car Repair bent door Repair surface rust on bodywork Restore paint Start mods! So car comes into work shop at about 12pm, I go home for lunch and come back at 3pm went home at 7pm heres what I did I knew there was issues with the front valance and it would most possibly need some welding so using the trusty pointed hammer I gave it a few taps! holes started to appear. To cut a long storey short it was full of P40! so after cleaning it up it looked like this on both corners After crying for a little while I stripped off the wings (they bolt on woo!) Tbh I was expecting a few holes as the previous owners son had done some suspect welding around the front inner wings. Wing off reviled previous attempts and a few holes like this after a clean up with the wire wheel I marked out where to cut Quite a bit to do down the passenger side a-post. The outer skin has gone in several places. Started to trim back the valance ready for patches to go in. Holes a plenty. A bit worse than I was hoping for but then again ive done enough of this kind of thing before to expect it so its not major problem. I want to get it sorted sooner rather then later so I don't end up trying to sell a heap of rust in a years time! Product of the Day goes to this very impressive Por15 'Metal Ready' Basicly, say you have a patch of surface rust, give it spray and leave it for 30-60mins ensuring it stays wet (normaly only need to re apply once in 60mins) after its dryed all the rust turns into a white powedery stuff and to can paint straight over the top The reason it beats all other rust treatment things ive tryed is A. it can be sprayed on so you can spray it inside box sections etc. that you cant get to with a brush B. it has the consistancy of water so it penitrates into semes very well and generaly goes everywhere! C. it dosent harm paint what so ever so you can litraly spray it everywhere and not have to worry! D. it appears to work!

looking forward to seeing this one progress, ive seen nicely modded metros before but they're usualy the later ones and rover 100's. ive used various rust treatments before but even after scraping alot of rust off they only tend to treat the very top surface of it, does this stuff realy penertrate it?

Fantastic to see that I'm not the only idiot prepared to get a metro back into 1 piece and run the thing! Methinks yours will be better than mine though cos I'm ingoring all the non-mot rust! And the only mod on mine is a saab coil cos I burnt out the old wiring a while back. Starts bloody well though

Plans are basicly, decent set of wheels and slammed, then get down to engine stuff. Might go turbo but might just end up sticking a MG head on the current engine and leaving at that, depends how much time i have to spare and how slow the car feels (not taken it out for a spin yet!)
The rust stuff does seme to penitrate into the rust better then most ive used. You do need to clean off the worst of it 1st tho. A scraper and a wire brush is enough. For surface rust it pretty much gets rid of it and for deeper rust it atleast encapsulates it a bit.

Nice one. Looking good there.
Any reason why you gas weld rather than mig?
I really need to get some practice at gas welding as I never do enough of it.

Numerous resons relly.
- It looks better - Smaller weld means less to dress off or less noticible if you cant get get to it to dress off - Better butt welds (but welding with a MIG is a nightmare imo) - Stronger most of the time - You can grind it flat without loosing strength in the weld - You can weld 'dirty metal' so good for where you cant get a grinder in the clean off old rust and paint. - You can fuse weld but migs flob metal on whatever you do - You can weld seams without having to plug weld - You can weld a gap up to 4mm wide
Yeh quite alot of reasons, i do use mig sometimes either to plug weld for the original look or when i need to keep the area as cool as possible to avoid warpage or setting things on fire! ;D

Nice work slater, those look like some quality repairs.
I don't know about anyone else but I used to find those kind of welding projects mega therapeutic. Just me tinkering away on my own, maybe with Radio 4 on, with simple tools - welder, grinder, vice, hammer, tinsnips, clamps - taking my time slowly piecing back together some shonky old heap and trying my best to make it invisible. Its one of those things where a good job really is down to skill more than anything else (tools, equipment, money etc).

I would watch that Metal Ready stuff. I used it on the Ventora and that was the cause of one of the many fowl ups. They say you can paint right over it, yeah, you can so long as you don't mind the paint coming off in sheets the next day... Maybe POR15 own brand primer works with it but U-Pol certainly doesn't.

Still looking good there. I don't know why but it still always comes as a surprise to me when you see how rusty cars are when you start delving, even when they look surprisingly tidy from the outside. Quite worrying from a safety point of view as well.

Day 7- 12 Finished up the welding on the front end so have started on the rear dropped the subframe off Doesnt look to clever to me considering those are the only 4 bolts holding the whole rear end of the car on! Picking up something special on friday, stay tuned ;D
