Here's a challenge, I'm in need of a competent tow car, UK-bought and registered, to use in Czech. I'm currently struggling quite illegally with a Skoda Felicia 1.9 diesel estate that can only really pull 750kg according to manufacturers spec, with car loads that weigh up to 1100kg and a twin-axle Brian James that weighs 450kg on its's own !! - First query, anyone know a one-stop website where I can source the legal tow-weight info? and the real showstopper, the budget is only a grand English !! - My favourite would be Audi 5-pot 100/200 Avants, but I'm open to suggestions based on your experiences. Or even offers - but not quick-sale-needed, I've got one to sell here first. - Yours overloadedly -John

John Do you intend to use it as your daily driver as well? I'd think a smaller truck or van would better suited for towing if you plan on doing a fair bit, as Merlin infered. Keep in mind I'm used to smaller meaning 200hp V6. Or do you prefer a sedan (saloon?)?

Mondeo 1.8td estates are v.good for towing and have room, pull very well up hills. cheap as chips to buy too. We used to use one for towing our autograss mini and now the sprint one.
LR discovery's are also legendary at towing, as are the RR.

JD - it'll be a daily driver as well for the time being, so a van isn't practical. The Passat 5 was a thought, basically 'cos it's the Audi 5-pot engine but neither it or the Mondeo estate are legally up to the job, plus the F**d 1.8Td in a Mundane of the price/age I'm looking at is a piece of curse word, I worked at Ford dealers when the Mondeo was new and long after the 97 model change, if I was given one as a gift I'd sell it on without using it. - V6 Scorpio auto makes more sense though thisty even when not towing. - Someone elsewhere than here suggested cheapest poss. 4x4, which unfortunately seems to mean Frontera, but even as a Skoda driver I do have certain concerns about image !

John, what about looking for another Scoob legacy, or was the last one a bit thirsty on fuel, and pricey on parts?

My old mans got a 5 series beemer turbo diesel and it pulls pretty well, pretty cheap to run too. don't think you would get one for a grand at the moment though! What about an old range rover? bit thirsty but it will pull nearly anything and ive seen a fair few for less then 500 notes! Marcus.

I used to have a '92 2.0ltr (8 valve) Cavalier 4x4 and that was a brilliant tow car. Cost me £1000 to buy, was economical when driven sensibly as an everyday car but was exciting enough when required. The 8 valve also has near standard but colour coded bumpers so it doesn't look gawdy like the GSi version.
Just another option.

Frontera? Cavalier? You certainly make for a lot of homework for an underexposed lout like me. Overhere a Cavalier couldn't tow a doberman.

John, what about looking for another Scoob legacy, or was the last one a bit thirsty on fuel, and pricey on parts? Legacy 4-cam turbo estate - it was only thirsty on fuel because I drove like a nutter (witness last Curborough !) and only expensive on parts the month before MOT-time ! I'd have another one like a shot at the right price, not much to touch it except an equivalent-spec Audi but with Audi you can't get the Avant/4x4/turbo all together - small niggle really.

The non-towing consumption might be a frightener but it makes sense as regards the condition of Czech roads - the suspension should cope with that, which is nearer off-roading than the use a lot of RR get in UK, ie just the school run and Safeways car park !

Hi John...what about a Carlton Diesel Estate....you could put one car in the back and tow another one....they're massive inside.....pretty good fuel economy and still look quite good....and you can pick them up cheap....a grand would buy a very good one near me....its what i'm thinking of buying after CZ. ;DVOLVO !!!!! You are in the right age bracket now and you could always pretend you have a caravan on the back and not some weird Skoda ! The Scooby was fun and with photos' to prove how to nearly pull the rubber off the rim at Curbourgh,it was a quick estate to boot !!!! As for F@~d...i would never speak to you again SPLITTER ! p.s. All Fords fans,we are not talking early stuff, only the one where blue oval means the smoke pumping out of the exhaust !

850 estates can be had for reasonable money, start at £900!
Dad drives a v70, 2.5, kick down is brill, overtaking is done at ease, the most comfy car by far too.
