my guess.... insane price of Mk2 Golf GTI 16vs (commonly referred to as 'Valvers' on VW forums)...
pre-scirocco i was looking at some older ones, sort of mid-to-late 80's. even ones needing work for an MoT and obvious ratty bodywork were £250+ ... one had a mangled front valance, tailgate you could almost see through because of the rust, no tax or test, bidding started at £200!

The price of second hand watercooled VW bits takes the bloody curse word to be honest. Although it does seem that a lot of the sort of people that have those type of cars these days have more money than sense anyway. You only have to look on one of the more "popular " club sites to get a clear indication of that.  |

it all goes in waves... Mk2 GTIs will rocket up in price soon as they're being bought up by ex-yuppies who had one in the 80's and are trying to regain their youth. Leaving us mortals to drive polos, sciroccos, cool slammed passat estates etc. Very soon they'll realise that the GTI isn't half as comfy as their S-Class company Merc so flog it on, fully restored, at rock bottom prices as it's making their block-paved driveway look messy. Same thing happened with beetles in the 80's, when £2k would just about get you a scabby wreck yet today you can't give a totally solid bug away for that. Bus prices meanwhile have shot up so far nobody can afford to buy them so they're dropping again (sambas for £25k?? right-oh!)... my predictions is that 205GTi prices will double over the next year as they become rarer and more appreciated, and hopefully scirocco prices go up too  |
