Great day we had at Cadwell yesterday, lots of grinning Golf drivers
Started out quite early to make our way to Cadwell, it's only 50 miles from home, but seems much further as it's mainly B roads, got to the circuit at about 8am, signed in and went to the breifing which was one of the most thorough I've heard at any track day, lots of emphasis on the over taking rules.
Out for 2-3 sighting laps behind a Mondeo, at a steady pace the first time we went through Hall bends I thought "I'm going to enjoy this section "
As it was open pit lane the day was very relaxed , had time to have a chat with peeps and time to spectate
Fitted the AO48Rs after the sighting laps as the track was damp in the shaded areas first thing.
Out on track, out of the pit lane, into the lovely flowing Hall bends, right hander, left hander, right hander leading into a crest and the slowest part of the circuit the Hairpin, 2nd gear corner with zero run off, short squirt in 2nd up to the entry of Barn, track dropping away from you leading onto the straight.
On a good lap getting right to the top of 4th gear down the straight and during the day built up my speed going into Coppice, and uphill left hand corner which was getting on for 100mph turn in
Dive for the apex but keeping on the left side of the track for Charlies, and double right again off camber, I didn't really get the hang of that corner all day, but Ian (IV mk1 16v) came out with me for the last short session and told me the right way to go on, but next lap the chequred flag was out
Down Park straight slightly downhill then an uphill climb with a blind crest braking on the 100meter board or a bit further on depending if i'd cocked up Charlies 2 or not Park corner was basically a 90deg right, 3rd gear job, pretty simple straight forward.
Chris curve seemed never ending, leading to the Gooseneck, a tricky chicane that drops away from you on the exit, then steeply downhill to Mansfield, more than 90 deg left with a bit of understeer on turn in, trail braking there helped sort that.
Then the fun part, short blast from Mansfield into the braking area for the Mountain, which was bumpy and unsettled the car a bit, then the awesome flick left, right and up and over the steepest climb I've seen on a UK circuit, flat out in 2nd over the top, engine revs soar a bit as the fronts get very light. Into 3rd for the Hall bends and thats a lap of Lincolnshire's mini - Nurburgring
Best fun of the day was keeping pace with an orange and yellow E36 M3 , he'd pull a gap on the two straights but through the twisties we sat with him
Nice to see all the regulars there with grins on their faces and nice to meet Steve R and his mate Dave, Karen and her crew. Got a few pics to upload , I did take some video, but had to sign a disclaimer that if it was publically broadcasted MSV could charge me £25,000 Click for pics, no linking please.
