Just called Elephant to tell them I have a non standard air filter fitted. The gay 'Dave' that was on the other end put me on hold to speak to the oh so clever under writers.
"that'll be an additional £91 on your premium mister tait, as its a non standard part that makes your vehicle go faster"
I done my nut down the phone, curse word I'm not paying that, and he said the direct debit has been put onto the premium, if I want to change it I have to get a letter from a garage to say its been changed for a standard one!
It doesn't do curse word all to the performance it just sounds more fruity, oh and if I were to pay the additional £91 for having the K&N, they wouldn't pay out for the mod in an accident...
Robbing bastards, I hate insurance companies.

It does seem that adding anything that wasn't fitted as standard automatically means your car goes much faster and therefore is hugely more dangerous and expensive to repair.
Perhaps I ought to inform my insurers that the air in the tyres isn't standard anymore.........

Tait, Either advise the underwriters it is NOT a performance modification ( which some filters aren't ) or change insurer. The likes of Tesco ( who I'm with ) don't raise the premium for such mods ( adding performance or not etc ) When I was modifying a first mk2 mondeo ( no laughing at the back please ) I advised them of the new 17" alloys / PiperX filter/ New racer cams / Powerflow Xhaust / Lowered Suspension all at once.................................and the addition in premium was £0, nada, not a bean ;D So definately worth shopping about, also try www.comfused.com very good for getting the best deal. I thought I'd be honest John and tell them, what a joke that was, feel like I've mugged my self!. His name was Dave, and he was an absoloute iron, elephant.co.uk are based in Wales, so I reckon he's the only gay in the village?? The underwriters won't make an exception for my car. They are 'know all f*ck alls' by the sounds of things. I'm going to take it off, just ordered a standard setup from 106parts.co.uk Apparently the standard setup works better on the 106. Going to order that 'thermo foil' from demon tweeks and wrap everything up in it, to maximise the chance of cold air entering the system. I can easily get my local garage to write me out a letter on headed paper. I might give tesco's a go. Co op were the same when I was with them last year, it seemed a free for all with mods to the car. But it's whether they will pay out in the event of a crash

I hope that Footman James wont add to much to my premium when i start modding the Imp. At the moment I'm pleased with the price for a standard Imp.

HIC are pretty clued up... they have two levels of mods - fast and not fast. my fastback is classed as standard even though it has a flipfront, alloys, stripped interior etc because it's no faster than standard. my polo was classed as faster cos i was honest about the uprated charger and exhaust but it added all of about £40 to the premium - that's a good 25-30bhp, not a 2bhp-if-you're-lucky air filter. stuff like suspension and styling mods they won't add to your premium for, it's only when you drop the 3 litre v6 into your XR2 that they ask for more cash elephant are a pile of steaming doggy curse word. they're all to quick to flog you the 10 month "bonus accelerator" policy - great when you're 17, get 4 years NCB in 3 years 4 months. Except no other insurance company recognises this and will only give you 40 months NCB, i.e. 3 years - having moved from elephant last year i'm on my second year of 3 years NCB! their customer services are useless and i once got charged to cancel a policy on my second car, a month after i got it, after finally getting the policy details though and finding it didn't cover me for anything i wanted.

it's like that TV advert... "will you be driving the car? oooh that's going to push it up!"
they have this bunch of stats to show that left handed people are 0.00035 times more likely to rear-end a volvo estate on a thursday morning, and if you have a moustache then someone will steal your head unit on the 4th April. it doesn't matter!!!
my car is on a driveway. it doesn't matter if it's there, or on the street, if someone wants my collection of knackered cds out the door pocket they'll take them. they never ask you where you like to go out which to my mind is more likely to affect the chances of getting your car nicked - if you're at home for 8pm every day then it's safe, if you leave it outside a pub till midnight every night then it's not so safe.

AVOID HIC
i know what i just said... it's all b'locks!
just rang them to get a quote on changing my Audi insurance to a Scirocco... "oh we've cancelled your insurance on the 2nd March". WHAT? Apparently they tried to ring me and sent two letters - god knows where to as i've not recieved a thing. the long and short is that i've been driving around uninsured for three weeks, blissfully unaware.
they've quoted me £550 for a storm which is a bit excessive, being limited mileage and all. think i'll look elsewhere!
EDIT - hmm five minutes with confused.com and we're looking at this
HIC - nasty nasty customer service, £550, no benefits, no agreed valuation.
Lancaster - £270, full years breakdown cover, classic policy, heard nothing but nice things about them, agreed valuation.

Re yr Merc, I don't want to be pessimistic, but Highway (politeness prevents me saying what I really think of 'em) wrote off my lovely 316i which sustained the same amount of damage...

Because I had comprehensive, and as just a front wing needed replacing, that's what I thought they'd do...
