right then my clever, anonymous internet friends heres a question. the engine in my type 4 can also be found in the porsche 914.this has a 5 speed box.id assume it will bolt straight onto my motor, but the 914 is a mid mounted car and my 411 is rear. my question is-how can i get this to work in my car? does the diff need to be swapped or turned and what about linkages?also the clutch in the 411 is hydraulic and the porka is cable.can this be dealt with? any info will be much appreciated

can you not get a five speed from a transporter to fit. The 914 was a VW box wasnt it so I am surmising its originally a front drive box and I would have thought that it would be a right curse word on to make it work properely. Can you get away with just turning a gearbox over to change the drive, I know it would work but then you might have problems with lubrication, bellhousing bolt holes would be out of line. I am probably completely wrong there as this theory is all based on conjecture hypothesis supposition and a litre of whisky

I, too, am well under the influence of the alkyhole, so forgive the utter b0llocks that I might be speaking..... Is the 914 transverse-mounted? If so the boxes will be different. But that's fookin obvious innit? If not, there must be some difference. You could try it and see, but you might end up being able to do 120mph in reverse! ;D ;D ;D I'll regret posting this reply in the morning cos it doesn't help at all really does it?! Wouldn't have thought that the clutch being mechanical / hydraulic would be much of an issue as the both operate the same fork on the thrust bearing (i.e.: they do the same job) If my beer-addled brain is anything like as clear as I think it is, shouldn't you be able to turn the diff over to change drive, rather than turn the whole 'box over? I admit I don't have the foggiest what the set-up is like on these Porkers and Dubs so I'm kind of thinking out loud here.....
