as the title, says what is the best way to transport an engine? i have my eye on an engine on ebay and was just wondering if i win it, what it the best way to collect? keeping in mind my car has no tow hook for a trailer or anything. so would just wanging it in the boot work?  |

Should be OK. Depends on what size the boot & engine are I spose ;D
I got my last one like that - though it was in an estate & I was sat in the back reaching into the boot area to keep a good hold of it & it wasn't too far either ;D
Can you get hold of packing stuff to use like old sofa cusions or bits of pallet or something to at least try to keep it in position as best you can so it's sort of 'wedged' in there?!?

didnt think about using packing cusions,
engines always seem to be located miles away from me so itd be a bit of a treck but ah well
boot is e30 bmw size so fairly spacious not overly deep though. il have to ask for engine measurements ;D

Yeah it depends on the engine - something like a Ford CVH should be OK in a hatchback. I was talked out of trying to shift a Merc V8 in a Hyundai Pony   , by ScrapingScrap - thought dismantling it in his garage was a better idea. I shifted my V8 and box in a small van and the suspension was groaning! But that's extreme... most 4 pots should be light enough to sling in the back of an estate, hatch or something I reckon.  What kinda engine are you looking at buying, and what's it destined for?! ;D |

You'll have to do some serious jiggery pokery to insert it into an e30 boot, it will have to be rotated as it's inserted (oo-er!  ), and that could be tricky. Beg / borrow or steal a hatchback off someone (OR BUY MY POLO!!!!). Either which way you wouldn't get me transporting an oily engine in the boot of my beemer! ;D Oh and what jengine be it? I have espied a low-mileage iS engine & box on the bay. May be some blaggage on the horizon!!  |

Saloons might look cool but they're pretty cack at shifting stuff aren't they? My Benz has a massive boot but unless what I'm shifting is under 4 inches high it won't go in!! ;D ;D Plus, I wouldn't like to try and lift any engine over that lip into the boot. If it was a knackered old Orion or summat you wouldn't mind it getting scratched resting the engine on the bumper... but a nice e30? Hmm I wouldn't wanna scratch it. Van hire is only £25-£30 for a day, you could just chuck it straight in then! |

where to where ?? always worth asking for help on here. i know a bloke who does a daily run Nottingham to London down M1 who shifts stuff at a bloody cheap rate. shifted many mini engines in the passenger seat's place. (butchered the odd door card too ) |

i took the 5.0 v8 out of my cortina home from the workshop the other day in the back of the kadett that was fun ;Dthough the steering felt a bit light i also had the engine hoist in there at the same time. took the spare pinto that i had at home round to my mates house the same way the day after  |

i once transported a beetle flat-four, complete engine with tinware and fan housing, in the back of a fiat uno.... suspension didn't thank me but hey |

I've shifted various engines, mostly Imps, in the boots and/or backseats (don't worry, I put binbags down to protect the trim! ;D ;D) of Volvos, never had problems, but you might want to pad the floor of the boot, and for f*ck sake secure the thing tightly and securely, otherwise it'll move around and do all manner of damage to the engine and the car it's travelling in (no heavy braking or you could find yourself with an engine embedded in the back of your head etc! ;D ;D ;D) and drain the oil of course if it isn't already, but the main thing is stop it from moving, but that's just common sense really! ;D ;D

HUMONGOUS Volvo Estate over here, if its local ( Warwick or Lichfield ) way then drop me a line, plus I have crews in LWB Sprinters all over the country most days, and they'd prob pick it up for a crate of beer ;D |

I relied on gravity to keep the V8 in place in the van.... it was a bit unnerving when in the middle of a left hand bend the lump would slide to the side of the van and it'd rock over!
