g/f has been thinking about a camper van/caravan so we're havin a ganders on ebay at the moment. I prefer a van, she prefers a caravan! Can we see some tricked out campers and caravans? I get the feeling I'll be fixing up a caravan by the end of the year! totally amazing citroen vans, love these things anybody make anything else like it? saw a brilliant fold out caravan the other day too I really like the teardrop caravans but SWMBO is a bit calustraphobic so that aint goin to work, plus nowhere to pee!

If your daily has enough beef to tow a caravan, a caravan works out a lot cheaper. Lower maintainance costs than a camper, and no MOT and tax to sort out. If you are going to use it a lot, and your daily isn't much good for towing, a camper van can make sense though! Commer PB.. That would be my choice personally.

Caravans have the advantage that you can drop the caravan off and hoon off to the shops. Having to pack up the camper just to nip out for something is a pain! We took this one to Sweden last year Very slow, very noisy. Now have a tiny caravan to tow behind the 2CV and so far, much prefer this solution. Haven't undertaken a mammoth 3000 mile road trip with this combo yet though!

Tanya (SWMBO) likes these folder-upper caravans, we're only going to consider 2 berth though as I only have a 1600cc polo and don't fancy hauling anythign too big and turning into the thing i hate most (a caravaner doing not very mph on long open highways)
but then I see something like that citroen and just melt.

I always loved H vans - until I had to drive one! Then the romance wore off a little. Seriously, you need some wheel time before getting carried away on Ebay. Plenty of people love them but it's just too much of a compromise for me.
My Eriba Puck caravan would easily be towed by your Polo. Only downside is that small caravans tend to be pricey as there aren't many of them.

good to know, we've seen a particularly ropey one in a field recently that looks well enough to be fixed up. the vans really that bad? cant find much info on them, they rwd or fwd? petrol or diesel? they have a very securicor look to them I'm keeping my peepers peeled on ebay at foldable caravans, they seem such a bloody good idea

A camper van means that you have to pack everything away before you can go out for a drive while you're away. Unless you buy a suitable tent awning to store stuff in. Shall I plug trailer tents again? More space for your money than a caravan, lighter and smaller to store. Or you could have both

CF everytime. At work and can't get pics but you know the score. Pop-tops are ace, just make sure floor below bunks has something soft to land on. Not a nine year old sister like my lad fell on one holiday

Camper or didi caravan is so on the wish list! Saw a massive camper van the other day, towing a Ford Ka behind it on a bar! bit overkill IMO ;D

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Front wheel drive, petrol or diesel. Expensive in good order but I'd advise doing what we did, leaping in pretty much blind. Get a feel for them first! They are fun to drive, just a bit much for serious mileage. They're a pig to work on too.

This is mine: Beats the inevitable VW (IMHO)! Plenty of space and tall, so best of both worlds really.

Those H vans are terrible to drive. It's like driving a water tank with a dumper truck engine bolted to it. :-)

g/f has been thinking about a camper van/caravan so we're havin a ganders on ebay at the moment. I prefer a van, she prefers a caravan! Why not get both ;D I think it all depends on how much you fancy spending. The camper option is obviously the more expensive option. If it´s anything pre 70´s it´ll be slow, loud and expensive to run, but who cares! ;D The cheaper option is the caravan but do you have a car that can tow it? How about somewhere to park it in winter? The older ones will need fixing up just like a van. Van & tent is also an option... ;D

As said, its a pain in the chuff to pack up a camper just to nip to the shops for bread and milk. Also, watch the heights, anything much over 2 meters and you start having trouble getting into carparks etc. even supermarkets now often have height limits on the parking. Caravans...personally, I hate them, but thats due to spending several years repairing them. Possibly the better option for practicality, but they can be hard on your towcar, and no-one likes the stereotypical caravanner image, 40mph on the country road with dozens of cars stuck behind it. It all depends on your outlook, both have good and bad points so you need to carefully consider what you are going to do with it. Long touring holiday spending a day here, a day there and always on the move? Id want a motorhome. Has to be comfy to drive though. Heading to a set destination and spending the holiday in that area, id want a caravan, set it up and leave it as a base and use the car for touring around each day. Other things to consider... whats your cars kerb weight and max train weight? the caravan club recomend for beginners that your van weighs 85% or less of the cars kerbweight, obviously without exceeding the train weight. If your towing with a polo, thats not going to leave you much capacity. look up kerbweights and tow capacities here... www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/kerbweights.htmWhat about your licence? did you have the category that allows you to tow stuff? If you passed your test more recently, you wont automatically have this so may need to sit a trailer test. can you afford to tax, mot and insure and run a camper van? and is it worth it for something that might only get used a couple of weeks a year? EDIT - reading this back, it sounds kind of negative, thats not how I mean it to be, I'm just trying to point out that it requires a fair bit of consideration.
