Those of you on here who are doing work on your cars at home - what do you run your welding gear off?
Do you have a 32a supply or run it straight from a 13a standard mains supply?
Or is it gas only?
Cheers!

Don't know yet - going on a course starting April, but just doing some research into whether using one at home is safe and possible - probably just bike related stuff at first but hopefully car bits and pieces as i get more proficient and have more space (in the future)

My 210 amp MIG draws 30 amps at max power so I rewired the shed with lots of chunky wiring.

Erm... never thought about that really! ;D 130A welder plugged into the nearest socket in the house, usually using a couple of extension leads... ;D

Ok cool, sounds plausible then
first plan after i've learnt is to build myself an adaptable frame building jig that will fit onto a standard workmate type folding workbench, then i can play with frame ideas that i have kicking about in my head
and eventually build the honda engined fiesta i've been thinking about fo the last 3 years :-)

I use a good quality extension reel and unravel it all, particularly if I'm doing thick stuff on a high power setting. Other than that normal socket as the others said

The thing is, if you are doing sheet metal, you are likely to never turn it up higher than what a 13amp supply can handle. Everything you would want to attempt with a DIY welder would want a setting under 100 amps.

Cool
I really want to be able to TIG as wel for intricate stuff but that seems mega expensive and quite a skill, so in the mean time i might just have to learn to fillet braze and find some kit :-)

TIG ain't mega expensive. I've got a 160amp HF start tig from germany. 100% duty cycle at 130amp, 60% at full whack. brand new- £180. I've run my 170amp elto oil cooled arc at full whack of the mains plug, it worked, but I don't know how many people lost thier TV signal ;D

Got a 185A MIG on a 13A plug that can run flat out without blowing a fuse- as could my old 188A before it. Usually trips the thermal cutout on the welder first........

Cool :-) Thats quite inspiring - i did a brief google search before and couldnt see a TIG for under £700. Found lots of MIG though. My problem is that i would need a TIG (and learn to use it properly!) for bike work and a MIG for any larger scale or car work. A MIG welded thin tubed steel bike frame would be atrocious :-) Will see what happens on my beginners course - car work is a long way off anyway due to money and space, unless i use a generator in my garage and drive the neighbours mental, or use a massive extension cord, burn down the house, and drive donna and my neighbours mental ;-) Whilst i'm unable to get a project i may as well learn the skills i will need. its really frustrating having a garage, but it being useless as a garage because its effectively a large dark box as its powerless :-)
