anyone tried anything that worked, ive a K engined Metro just got it and replaced the pump but the prev owner must have got it hot and the head gasket is leaking water Straight out though when hot not into the oil and no oil leaks
Its not worth buying a head gasket, getting the head checked and replacing the long stretch bolts so thought id try and seal it up only heard of Barrs but was wondering if theres anything better out there

Head gasket sealers and stuff are modern version of snake oil (cures baldness, impotency etc. but does nothing)
Get the head checked but get the block checked too. If there is more than 40 thou difference between the tops of the liners you need a new block!
If the head and block are ok use new bolts and a head gasket sourced from Land rover as their head gaskets seem to last longer.
Make sure you get all the oil out the cooling system too.

I think the minimum bodge which you can expect to work is replacing the head gasket with the new design one, fitting metal locating dowels, and putting it all back together, torquing the stretch bolts up in several goes, retorquing them the next day, BEFORE running the engine.
That would be your minimum for keeping an old banger on the road, and would have a good chance of success, but not be as sure as a proper job.

its not mixing oil and water just leaking water cars only worth ÂŁ350 so its not really worth the expense of buying a gasket and bolts etc
shame as its a 2 owner low mileage full history metro

but above all, it's a Rover!

If it is leaking water, that means it is on its way out. Change it NOW and you may get away without any further fuss. The dowels are a must if it still has the plastic ones in. Neither the gasket nor the dowels are expensive.

Few years ago one of the nightmares had a singer vogue that puked its water on the way back from the old hayling island show put some Holts wonder weld in and it lasted close to a year before it finally gave up. Might be worth a go before you strip it down if you only want it to struggle on for a bit.

Ok in an old banger with a heavy cast iron engine, pointless in a rover K that has warpef the block lip (does the water come out of the gasket like a waterfall down the front or back?) oops. A good gasket (ÂŁ70 from payden, includes the dowels etc) and new bolts, it might last. BUT if you are on a budget and don't want to throw money at it, scrap it now and buy something else.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

^^^ Good advice
I'd say try some K seal and run it till it drops.

I did put some 'block sealant' in a Mk1 Mondeo a few years ago. It worked for a while, but other bits of the cooling system kept failing, so I got rid soon afterwards.

K-seal (available on eBay) and chuck it into the auctions. Failing that S.O.C's advice is, as usual, spot on. I,m told Land Rover gaskets are actually better than Rover ones for the same engine incidentally.

is it called k-seal exclusively for the k-series? they do like their head gaskets don't they!
I heard you got a replacement head gasket in with the owners manual from new. Roffle!

Use a thin smear of WELLSEAL on the head and block mating surfaces and both sides of the gasket, wait until tacky then fit. BARRS LEAKS in the water is good stuff too.

Did you read any of his message at all? Pay attention at the back! If that is directed at me, you orange-skinned silver-haired double-barrelled numpty , I was suggesting how the engine should be re-assembled following correction of the problem.

It seems to me that you either fix it properly or bin it because it ain't going to last long running with HGF and chances are it'll go into complete meltdown at THE most inconvenient moment possible.

Buy a 1.8 K series ;D and chuck that in.Or chuck the the car.The K series head problems have been around for awhile now and no magic potion is going to cure it.So you have to weigh up the cost versus how long you end up keeping the car,but if it was me i would use it as an excuse to move on to another car.
