Back when Roger Moore was 007, a GS engine could be squeezed in, but nowadays is a turbocharger the right way to go? Anyone make kits with different stages of tune? Surely the 'big bore' Visa engine isn't common these days so what do people do? What about the race cars? Is it better to buy an ex-racer for speedy (relatively) road use? How does fuel economy suffer? Is there a higher ratio gearbox to make the most of more torque or do people just rev the engines faster? Is 70bhp a realistic amount to expect with reliability? Thanks chaps!

I was going to turbo mine years ago.. stripped almost all the fins off a spare set of heads and welded aluminium sheet around them as I was going to water cool the heads.. but never got round to it.. turbocharging has been done before and I love the idea of it.. twin engining is easy.. gs gsa engine is an option.. most std bores can be opened out for visa pistons but some wont.. kent do cams for them.. the heads are about as good as it gets portwise and are hard to improve upon.. cam timing on these engines is a bit random from factory it depends how accurately the pully is pressed on! this is the main reason ive found that some will do 70mph no prob and others struggle to pull 4th gear and do 50mph!! flattening the tip of the rocker arms is a trick racers use to give a little more valve lift with std cams.. do away with the restrictive exhaust and make a better intake with bike carbs. sort out accurate timing with a decent cam and maybe a set of visa pistons and your away.... si

70bhp seems a lot, thats triple the power, and 116bhp per litre. I can remember reading about a 2cv race team who managed that but can't remember how much work it took.

Speak to these people www.2cv-speed-shop.co.uk It's the man behind the car that won 24hrs this year. The racers are kicked out about 50bhp. Problem with much more is that the gearbox can't really cope. Some people have supercharged them but with forced induction, heat becomes the issue.

The Belgian racers allow much more in the way of engine modifications so their cars have much less in common with road going 2CVs. Apparently, some of them rev up beyong 10,000rpm on the standard crank! It can apparently cause the bearings to suffer if prolonged however...

Thanks everyone! As ever, speed costs money. Obviously the 2 engine suggestions are just too bonkers for words but it looks like it's a lot of money to make a 2CV go still quite slowly Are cars significantly cheaper en France for a rust-free '70s or early '80s version? LHD is not a problem

Mr Blitz - the 24 hr 2CV race of course! Currently takes place every year at Snetterton during May. Not for the faint hearted! Was a complete washout last year. The warmest and dryest place to be was behind the wheel. I really felt for the pit crews!
Gareth - it isn't that easy to make a 2CV go faster unfortunately but the race engines in this country are pretty close to standard really. The bloke who did that winning engine is a little reluctant to share his techniques in forum land though as it's a competitive edge! I'd be interested for someone else to experiment with NOS but I reckon it could all go wrong!
Prices even in France are on the rise as they have a huge following there and in Holland/Germany. Seventies 2CVs have drum brakes of course, disc from 1981. No post by me on this subject would be complete without me saying that Dyanes are a bargain still. Even the best rarely if ever crack £2000.

Harley coils are often used, not heard of the engines being used myself.
Beemer bike engine is another one I've considered - I'll have to read that later!

When I was messing around with 2CVs I considered loads of stuff, it was always going to be on a budget... But here's what I remember. *I bought a Mahle big bore kit for it, 652cc ;D * I drove a turbocharged one that was built by a guy whose name escapes me. He'd used a Garrett 'T1' and it was utterly brilliant, he wanted 3k for the whole car a year later but I just couldn't afford it. I found him local to me in Somerset through an article in Performance Car or another magazine, maybe CCC. * I also heard people talking about Ducati twin carbs, but never did anything about it. Good luck with whatever you try, nowadays I'd stick a bike engine in and have done, oh and maybe some bike wheels and tyres too... Bare metal body with alloy sling seats...
