All work has stalled on the Metro GTa since my MIG welder decided to spew up its guts and weld the wire to the inside of the umbilical..... Anyway, I changed the feed tube and it still didn't work - I found it had got a kink and it acted as a brake. New tube, try again; worked better but the feed was curse word. At this point it was en route to the skip when I discovered this site www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/index.phpHad a good look around and found plenty of gen on SIP welders and how curse word the feed mechanism is (glad I'm not the only one then), but one of the members had a demon mod to improve it by fitting a steel strap between the drive roller block and the clamp wheel pivot. So, out to the workshop tonight and a piece of metal soon was shaped to fit and screwed into place. It was a damned revelation - near perfect feed and control of wire speed! ;D Why the hell SIP didn't fit this from new is beyond me - it would cost 10p max to stamp and fit a bracket and their reputation would be enhanced.... never mind. Anyway, demon mod #2 was to lower the feed reel bracket 1.25" which lines the wire up near perfectly with the feed mech. I now have a ten-year old welder that has never been so good and it not en route to the skip now.... ;D The site is well worth having a nose around as there is some really useful gen on there.

Good reminder, that site actually gave me the push to begin welding, using a new welder I have not needed to look back, but should go back to learning. its a great site!

Great stuff Marinanut! However, I can't find the thread on there relating to the mod... do you have a direct link? Me and Street share a MIG welder - a SIP 130, and it has similar problems. The liner was changed but it still welds curse word sometimes and doesn't feed - makes a mess of yer seam welds sometimes. Bizarrely it welded better when I was upside down doing the sill than it did welding inside the bulkhead!

Fitting one of the metal liner kits to my 12 year old TopMIG (ha!) was a distinct improvement for starters. The plastic ones they sell are rubbish by default, and the fact that they are coiled up in the packet to start with makes things even worse. The new swan neck was another bonus, and a good clean up of the wire feed mech and various electrical connections has brought performance to a better standard than I can remember. It's still not as good as a 'proper' pro-spec welder, but at least now it's useable and I don't feel the need to go out and yog a load of cash on another machine...

Ahh this looks a great mod thanks for posting! I have a Sip welder that doesn't like feeding wire too spent many an hour swearing at it! Will carry out this mod and hopefully it will work.

The new liner fitted to ours isn't as good as the original - it can't take 0.8mm wire now. I found this out the hard way when I changed the reel and spent ages trying to figure why it didn't work. Just means that it's 0.6mm wire only from now on. Might have a crack at that mod today - it's too cold to be painting so I'll need to busy myself somehow!

I notice Machine Mart do metal liners of the right length for SIP welders in their welder spares..... I may have to acquire one to try out!

Nice one for that, a picture speaks a thousand words and all that. That's so simple! How come I hadn't thought of that already?
