I'm spraying mine with 2K at the moment. Mixing ratios are on the tin. The high build primer is 3:1 paint to hardener and you can add up to 15% thinners. It sands real nice too, just doing that bit at the moment. Gloss 2K red going on top of that is 2:1 paint to hardener plus up to 20% thinners I think it says. I'm going down to clean up now so I can spray some red on tomorrow. Can't wait now ;D

Brilliant!
i think i understand now...
So the only real decision is weather to go Clear over base or direct gloss..
What is HS base? is that a trade name or what?
For my stripes would i be best laying them over the black if i go diect gloss? I appreciate that if i am lacquering the whole car then i shoot the stripes before the laquer aswell..
Are we agreed that 2k primer is the way to go? If i do would i need to etch prime the bare metal still? I havn't ever found a 1k/celly primer that is any good at all..
Should I barcoat anyway to be on the safe side? It's not going to be bare metaled all over just in certain areas...

Etch prime with just a dust coat over the bare metal only then shoot straight over everything with 2K Primer HS means High Solids Base is just "base coat" it goes on easy and then dries Matt, the Clear you put on top brings the colour / shine out For the stripes, you are going to need to clear over them, so you may as well go Base and clear the lot Other wise you will end up wiith Bonnet roof boot which has clear over and sides that don't or funny edges if you choose to just clear the silver (Needing pinstripes to look decent but the wrong decision IMHO) A decent 2K primer will go straight over most things if you have keyed them properly first and do the 1st coat dust/flash off/ heavier coat routine..... only usually get a reaction (If at all) if you go too heavy on the first coat HTH Dom

HS is high solids. the standard for basecoat now is (apparently) UHS which is ultra high solids. This has to be force dried in the booth with heat and airflow. Not handy for the DIYer. You also get waterbased basecoats now. Also a bit trixy for the DIYer to work with apparently.
HS basecoat (if you can still get it) is great stuff to work with, goes on a treat and covers well.
Best to explain to your paint supplier whatyou are trying to do and see what they can recommend you from their stock really. I've been well looked after by my local paint factor over the years.
