Aaarrgghhh Why cannot people be honest in their descriptions - went to view 2 engines and boxes today They were described on the phone as all there bar the starter motors, removed from running cars about a year ago, carefully stored undercover until about 2 months ago, filled with oil. The price was pretty good. When I get there they are being stored in the open air without covers, there is a lot of surface corrosion (much more than I would expect), the time they were removed from the cars keeps changing, the cars might not have been running, the history keeps changing, there is no oil in them and the dipstick is rusty (the oil might have leaked out when they were dragged out of the yard - careful storage???), one of the bellhousings is missing and the torque converter is very rusty. I walk away - perhaps they are the very good engines and boxes the seller claims they are but they would need a full rebuild before I would trust one in my project A Sunday wasted on a 436 mile round trip

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Rubbish! thats a lotto miles! what is it you need, maybe someone here has a nice one?... Don't need a nice one, just need one in working order or close. Plan is get the project running then worry about rebuilds and upgrades latter on. I want to V8 a MK1 Sierra - it is on a shoe string budget and I am collecting bits I need as I go along. Don't really want a Rover V8 and the Windsor small block fits a Sierra engine bay without major mods.

tis a pain that, I looked at a 302 recently (thankfully not too far out of my way) that was supposed to be a "good" engine, was a pile of bits in cardboard boxes, and a hammerite painted stripped block. For £500. Oh well.
Mind you, after all that distance I'd have been tempted to try and bag them for scrap money, or wouldn't the guy budge on proce despite having skip fodder?

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

The guy budged a bit on price but he was convinced that they were good strong engines - maybe they were but looking at the external condition of them I wasn't prepared to bet my money

Bought a 1100 Mini lump like that. Guy said it had only been moved outside recently and been covered. I was dubious cos it was covered in green stuff and cement! I only wanted the remote shift 'box and it was dirt cheap, so I took a chance. Was certainly very skeptical when he kept insisting it would run but might need a tow Drained 2 gallons of mayo out of it and had to 'hone' the bores with a file to get the pistons out Pity as it had been rebuit to a good spec, ported 295 head, 276 kent cam and solid skirt pistons. Got some good bits out of it but it was basically scrap. The icing was when the gearbox turned out to be sh1t as well but at least it was cheap enough that I got my money back in parts. Live and learn.

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

When buying any engine unless it can be previously seen running in a car I always treat it as if it will need a rebuild before fitting.

Was it a breaker's yard? I ask because I often wonder if they know full well the stuff isn't as described but bank on you either buying it anyway or something else instaed whilst you're there. Chances are even if he was a civvy so to speak he thought that you travelling all that way meant a guaranteed sale. Shame on them for bulling you though, very annoying when that happens.
