I honestly can't find a reason in the MOT manual to reject a car for not having a windscreen. Anyone have past experience of this? I was a testers assistant years ago but we never talked much about screens.

Hmm, that's an interesting one.
Would it be on something radically modified or just a standard car where the screen got broken so you took it out? I suspect that would have a bearing on things.
After all, there are quite a view track-orientated things that just have a little aeroscreen.

Yeah - I know there are things like Frogeye Sprites, Renault Spiders etc that never had a screen or had small aero screens.
I'm on about a normal saloon that has had the screen removed. I've looked throught the "Reasons for rejection" and can't see anything mentioning that you have to have one.

I THINK that the Metor-SD1 was MOT'd with no screen, as they couldn't get one. Well there's pics on the road without one so must have.
Come to think of it, whatever happened to that car - did it ever get completed properly?

It is quite legal, but when you drive to/from the MOT station, have the rear windows open, and go slow, or you will blow the back window out. Or just remove the back window too!
And wear safety goggles when you drive it, to keep the wind out of your eyes.
Lack of a windscreen also makes the wipers untestable i believe.

I THINK that the Metor-SD1 was MOT'd with no screen, as they couldn't get one. Well there's pics on the road without one so must have. Come to think of it, whatever happened to that car - did it ever get completed properly? Is it the chap from PPCs one? |

yeah you get a wet face when they test the screen washers LOL. Maybe it counts as a chip greater than 10mm?  |

Nope, windscreen not required for MOT. Also handily means no wipers or demister needed. How do I know this? A mate used to have a MK2 Land Rover with a knackered windscreen. He MOT'd it without the windscreen. This was ~10 years ago, I've not heard of any changes.

Do you need a demister for the MOT? As my old carlton didnt have and heater matrix / fan and passed?

That SD1 is ace. Good to see its still going, but last thjing i heard was the thread on pistonheads saying Charlie was stripping and mothballing it again as he wasn't happy with it. Shame he cant fit a screen, as it makes it a bit unusable

my 32 roadster had no screen so didnt need washers , wipers for mot , passed no problem

Sorry for the OT thing here but I've just noticed that the SD1 is LHD. Odd because some chap in America has done the same thing with a '55 Chevy but that's RHD! Just caught it on one of the shyte freeview channels the other night.

Not sure on the MOT, but I can remember going with my father to get his 1965 911 resparayed minus all the glass and bonnet. This was nearly 25 years ago.
We got stopped by the old bill and they tried to get on him for not having windscreen wipers fitted, after stating he had no windscreen he didn't need them, they checked the entire car couldn't find anything he could be charged with so let us on our way. ;D
Think if we got stopped today we would have problems because of the lack of bonnet.
