Well, i'm starting to plan what to do for RR08. Last year we drove at night (left 21:30 and arrived at 8:00 saturday morning ), but we missed the friday BBQ. I DON'T want that to happen again, so I want to arrive on friday, but I sometimes read about heavy traffic around London on this site? Since we're coming from Dover, I looked at some routemaps and we should be driving on the M20, M25 and M40 to get to Gaydon. But arriving around dinnertime (or a little bit earlier) means getting off boat in the middle of the rush hour. How bad is that idea? ;D

Sorry, I'd try and avoid the M25 from about 3.30pm on a friday till around 8pm, its madness then, the M40 is usually quieter most of the time, might pay to go cross country to Gaydon

I'm guessing you are having the friday off work then? Why not come over earlier to miss the traffic and find a motor museum to amuse yourself with until the time comes to meet?

I'm guessing you are having the friday off work then? Why not come over earlier to miss the traffic and find a motor museum to amuse yourself with until the time comes to meet? Yep, thursday and friday off (and monday and tuesday to have a save and normal return trip ). Trafficwise driving at night is great, but i was bloody exhausted last year and then the day had to still to start!

I can't think of a good route for you, the clockwise section you'd use is probably the worse bit at that time, but the Dartford Crossing section is also chocker, if you can get an early crossing on friday and come over at lunchtime (12-2ish) you'd be much better off, otherwise later is better ;D

oh btw, another thing, getting in time through the M25 means standing in the traffic jam around Antwerpen.... great... time for a rethink about this

Better to be on free flowing roads in a country you're not used to I'd say than queuing and getting stressed

How about catching the ferry to Felixstowe then you could get onto the A14 down to the M6,round Coventry on the A46 down to the M40 and then to Gaydon.

to be honest, i'm a bit scared to drive cross country through the UK, because i'm not used to driving on the wrong side of the road, and I noticed last year that the countryside is where mistakes are made Oi, its you lot who drive on the wrong side of the road matey ;D ;D What about coming over on the friday and hooking up with one f the RR convoys from the south east. I'm sure it'd be easier if you were in a group of people who knew roughly where they were going and you could just sit back and follow the car in front.

Just drive around on the left side of the road in your hometown until you get used to it! Then you'll be fine!

we chose Dunkirque-Dover to cross because it's the cheap (it's by far the cheapest crossing i've found, all the crossings i found, from Holland are €200-450 ). ah well, we'll see ;D

But don´t worry. If you hook up to our "RR08 or bust" European convoy we´ll be taking the early ferry Friday morning to Dover so that we are through London by lunchtime. Quite like the idea of meeting up with the south east lads to drive up to Gaydon together. I know we´ll be collecting Grizz in Rochester on the way up, anyone else going up on the Friday?

The M25 is not always a nightmare. Generally evening traffic drifts around calmly and without too many jams. Sometimes the average speeds are low but it is the easiest route, you don't get lost, you don't have to navigate and you don't have to think too hard.
Go for it. You'll be fine. Tune into Radio 4, listen to The Archers and you'll have a mellow journey.
