Loads of Polish etc work in our place, all driving N.I. registered cars. Their driving is in general terrible. On the way to/from work, we've seen them undertaking using sliplanes, overtaking down chevrons, cutting from the outside lane of a dual carriageway to turn left at lights etc. All within half a mile of a police station. There's nearly been fights in the carpark over it.
My sister works with a girl whose husband is a traffic cop and says that when they've pulled a car over they can usually tell if it's going to be a Pole driving before they speak to him. He said they'd stopped the same guy three times well over the drink-drive limit, confiscated his car and then stopped him days later in another car.

lots of shiny new Polish, Lithuanian, etc. registered BMWs and Mercs with blacked out glass in Nottingham recently. Whats that all about? No. I don't want to know. One Latvian or Estonian or something spanky new black 7 series had a private plate "DODGY". I'd have taken a photo, but it has a couple of well hard looking geezers hanging with it.

The reason they stay on PL plates is the same old English reason. We shaft ourselves and not other nations. The fine for driving a PL car in this country is less than it is to tax and mot it. So they keep driving, wait until they get pulled a few times, pay the fine and then maybe think about registering the car. Typical Britain

Guardian reading types in the UK alays rant on about "bloody furreners coming here living in ghettos, not integrating, claiming benefits, driving illegal cars etc etc blah blah...." then promptly move to southern france or spain where they live in little communities of ex pats making no effort to integrate, don't try to learn the lingo, try to get into the health system without making tax contributions and drive their uk cars for years on uk insurance while declared sorn and registered at their brother-in-laws flat in essex.

I think they are just as persecuted as we are, I was talking to one poor sod who`d had a very nice Opel Vectra confiscated as he had insurance for his own country but not for here. He had to take out a new policy to get it back plus pay a fine and storage etc. He was only here visiting some mates that work here. Ask yourself - if you were going to France for a week, would you ring round a load of French insurance companies getting quotes and that? Er.. no, I'd ring my own insurance company to ask if I was covered for France, and if not I'd pay the extra to make sure I was. Or I'd take the TGV instead. Sorry, your "poor sod" is just another irresponsible uninsured driver for not doing what I've outlined above. Imagine he'd been involved in a collision with a car containing your family, still feel sorry for him? I've heard all sorts of stories of dodgy east european cars but the ones I've seen have all been in pretty good nick. Mostly recent eurobland Opels etc too. There is one FSO Polonez - the version with a boot - that I see from time to time though.

bit like the volumes of foreign trucks on the roads these days. do they have to pay any licence fee to drive over here/speed.drive dangerous/pull out to the middle lane side swiping cars etc etc.
regarding polish trucks, have noticed on quite a few occassions the numplates have been different on the tractor/cab to the trailer. every time a PL lorry. usually on the m42 too

There is one FSO Polonez - the version with a boot - that I see from time to time though. I suppose you had to be there, the guy was not a scrote. After 5 years in the Dewsbury car trade, I know when I`m talking to a scrote whatever the accent, this guy was OK. I was going to hit the Tabacs in Spain last year, and to be honest I hadnt even thought of checking my insurance status out, I was just going to jump in a Vento and go and fill it`s enormous boot up with fine tobaccos - bit slack I suppose, and had I gone and run into a spanish family due to forgetting which side of the road I was on and cocking up a right turn there`d probably be a Spanish car forum wanting me dead - but I think that was all this guy was guilty of, being a bit slack. I wasnt saying it shouldnt have happened anyway, just that Polish drivers DO get stopped. Anyway this thread so far has nothing to do with old cars, not being funny or anything but it hasnt, has it?How about some nice FSOs?

With Dave on this one - I've worked in Germany, France, Belgium and has 'sojourns' into various other countries - and it always has the 'ex-pat' communites who have a fantastically high ratio of those who have been there decades and never bothered to integrate in any way shape or form....... it's ashaming to see that in general the brits still run around the globe with an imperialistic - we conquered your ancestors so speak our language - attitude. Apologies - rant over..... as he said - more old car pics please - JUST NOT FSO's!!! ARRGGHHHH

Didnt want this thread to turn into a Daily Mail / Guardian rant. It was just a realisation of a potential situation.
Similar to When I lived in Germany. I was there for 6 months. A work collegue looked at the tread on my Mk3 Cav & noticed they were at about 2.5mm depth. He had a fit. I told him that that was legal in the UK......................No doubt if I had been pulled over, the Germna Polizei would have thrown the book at me.

We know you didnt, just get some pics banged up there`s all sorts of crazy polish stuff out there.
The yellow one is called the Stratopolonez, and is apparently a Stratos engined Polonez. There`s Youtubevids out there of it, discussion forums and all sorts, very interesting piece of kit.

I just wish these Polaks would drive over the radioactive Eastern Bloc commie cars that they are all supposed to own. Then we'd have a fresh supply of odd tat to stash in our garages and make mad with.

That's right. I think most European countries have the trailer on a separate reg to the tractor, we're one of the few where it carries the reg of the towing vehicle.
This is in danger of turning into the "asylum seeker given £4000 to buy a car by the DHSS (which doesn't exist anymore) and has a 15 bed council mansion in surrey with sky TV" myth!
Most of the poles where I work drive mid-nineties Rovers or Peugeots. There's some lithuanians who have an "05" 7 Series BMW though and one who has a Lada Samara on polish plates.
