As an experienced rattle can user (lolz) does anybody find that halfords rattle cans are miles better than the others (hycote etc). For a start the valve is much easier to press so your finger doesn't get knackered constantly pressing it on and off. The paint finish you get out of em is also absolutely brilliant. I can paint large bits of car with a halfords rattle can to the same or better standard as most bodyshops do with a spray gun, however with hycote stuff its always wibblepoo and very patchy.

Yep, I've always gone for Halfords cans unless I was after something they don't do or I found something cheap at an autojumble for something not that important. Must be something about the way the nozzles are made.

I like there primer, but cant say i'm overly impressed with the rest. I use mixed tins of holts 'compressor in a can' from TRI (local paint factors) there brilliant, about £9 a can, but you'll never get as good results without a proper setup!

I got a can mixed up by a local paint factor, sprayed it on and it was dull as hell and the metallic didnt float very well. The halfords stuff I put on has gone on perfectly and the metallic has floated loads. Honestly you could put it on the car without polishing it and you wouldn't know.

I champion Halfords rattle cans as well, used in conjunction with the super duper trigger that I have which connects around the can top and presses on the nozzle for you, I get good consistent results.

I've got one of those trigger things don't use it very much though. You clamp the can in it and then theres a handle with a normal grab trigger like a spray gun. If you're doing big panels it makes it a lot easier to hold.

You used to be able to get universal can triggers from b&Q don't know if you still can.

Might have a look for one of those.... i've got big chubby fingers and after a long spraying session, i usually find my finger catches the edge of the paint spray leading to drips flying into the panel, and a painty finger.

I've always found the shine isn't very good on Hafords paint and I really hate that solvent they use.

They used to be fine a few years ago but I've found recently that Halfords paints cause far more reactions with other paints both used as a base and over the top.I've started using them less and less as a consequence.

i think it depends on the colour, for certain colours halfords seems loads better than the competition and well worth the extra they cost (hoping they do their 3 for the price of 2 offer again soon...)
but for some colours i've found the holts duplicolour cans in my local motorfactors are just as good, or better and cost less. pearl colours in particular.
i quite like the large cans of lacquer halfords do, which always polishes up nicely, but does tend to dull after a couple of months so needs polishing more often than factory paint.

I only use Halfrouds paint if I'm desparate - it's f*ckin astronomically expensive! I know what you mean about the coverage though, it is good. Next time I buy some paint (satin black half-litre cans from my independent factors for £2 a pop) I'll swap the cap with a Halfords one and see what the results are. Way too cold to be paint spraying now though!

The clio bonnet i've just painted was blue with a green pearl/metallic in and as I said it came out perfectly. Its shining like its been polished and no orange peel at all.

I like them, although havent used one for a long time.
If you find you are getting uneven spray form any can, submerge it in a bucket of hot water for 5 minutes before using it. This thins the paint and ups the pressure slightly and usually helps a lot.

www.automotivetouchup.com/store/accessories/aerosol_trigger.aspxThis one looks good. Mine is very old but does the same job. I find that using a trigger gives a more even pressure on the nozzle and encourages you to use the can more like a proper spray gun. As above, I always warm my cans up in hot water, and put them back in it between sprays. Making sure that the piece you're painting is warm helps as well. With care, a good finish can be achieved, after all, it's only paint! As with all things, it's the care taken in the preparation and application that makes a good job.

when i worked in halfords years back we often got people coming in..."Ive sold my car and the guy is coming to collect it this afternoon, i need some paint"....and they would go into the carpark with an aerosol and spray it over the dirt and crud to cover up stonechips or scratches, usually leaving huge runs etc. Then about a third of them would come back in..."This paint is curse word, look at the mess its made....."

I've found the primer doesn't stick very well either. And it smells funny.
