Turns out the steel MINI wheels I bought for the XJ40 have the wrong centrebore (too small). I could easily use a hole saw to cut the centrebore larger but it wouldn't be completely accurate. I've always believed that the centrebore isn't load bearing and so a centrebore that is too big would actually be fine (where the hub and nuts bear the load and the tapered nuts centralize the wheel). Could anyone confirm this before I cut the centres larger? I keep reading conflicting posts!

Can you not just run a small spacer so it clears? On alloys it's fine to run a too big/not round centre bore, but on steels I'm not sure how much of the centre bore pressing is used to add strength to actual mounting flange as the material is much thinner.

I'd agree with Matt,
Loads of places on eBay will make you up say a spacer with the 2 centrebores included so everything lines up just so

Isn't it correct that the answer here is "it depends"? I'm sure I've read that some wheels use the centre spigot for additional locating strength, but I don't have an example to quote - I'm generally obsessed with keeping everything standard so it's not something I've come across, I just remember reading it. I very much doubt the thing I was reading was about the XJ40, so apologies if this is taking it off topic. |

Not sure about all steels but some alloys are definitely hub centric and the centre bore for them needs to be correct as it centralises the wheel on a spigot, if they are too big you can buy spigot rings to adapt them, MR2's are like that

The force is transmitted through the bolts, the centre bore won't do anything unless the bolted joint fails, some cars rely on the centre bore for alignement others use the studs but as above the form in the centre of a steel wheel is critical to the strength around the the stud/bolt holes, you could probably get away with skimming a mm or so out of the centre but that is about it.

Just had a glance at that link, it couldn't be more wrong.
On wheels that use taper or ball seat bolts the centre bore provides absolutely no "resistance" to shock loading or any of that curse word. It's literally there to make it less likely for numpties to cross thread the bolts, or wind one bolt in as tight as it will go before winding the others in. That's why there's always a .1mm at the end of the wheel centre bore number, it's a clearance fit and therefore isn't "supporting" anything.
On wheels that use straight shank sleeve type fasteners the centre bore needs to be a good fit as there's nothing else of a tight enough tolerance to centre them, but that's about it.

It might not be supporting but it sure is nice if your wheels are properly centered to prevent you shaking out of the car at speed...
VW LT mk1 uses steel wheels and the version with single rear wheels don't even have a centering part on the rear drum. No supporting there for sure.

The wheel is centred correctly by the taper on the bolts pulling into the taper on the wheels. If you hand wind 2 of the bolts in till the taper engages there won't be any shake, unless the wheel is bent. |

Yeah, I get that for the LT. But for my own cars that are capable of a bit more speed I kinda like the centering on the hub centre.. 😉

It will be fine. If you wanted belt and braces just cut the old centre bore out and make up a new sleeve that can be welded in. People really over think this stuff.

This may be a silly question, but why not use the jag steel wheels? Surely cheaper to start with those even if you plan to band them.

I had the centre bores on a set of VW Beetle steel wheels enlarged - On the front of my Skoda Estelle, the hubs have a larger centre bore than a beetle (oddly enough there is NO centre bore on the rear at all). I took the two front wheels to a local machine shop and had them enlarge the centre bores to match (plus a tolerance of 0.2mm to make sure they actually fitted!). I think I paid £35 ish for a pair.

I've never done it, but if you're looking to enlarge a centrebore I'm told these are quite effective for keeping the centre in the same place - certainly more so than a hole saw!  |
