Sometimes very rarely, we are surprised that in our world of poorly made parts, something actually exceeds our expectations. The point of this is that after a dead battery on the XC70 last Monday and living rurally, I ordered a replacement unit which came and was fitted yesterday. The old one had worked very well up to this point and did after a charge, continue to work fine. Anyhoo, I looked at the Volvo branded (made in Germany) battery which I removed and did some research about it's age. I was blown away seeing it was manufactured in December 2005 and subsequently fitted to my 2006. I have never had a battery still in daily use which was 17 years old so in a nutshell, I'm impressed!
The few brain cells still in my head started thinking about how. I believe that as it is located in the boot and out of extreme weather and the harsh engine bay, this may contribute towards its longevity but who really knows? Anyone have a view on this and indeed is using a car with a battery even older?

Wow, that’s not bad going. I thought the one in the 2009 Mrs69Mobile was doing well, which has been in there since new. Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty weak now, but it just keeps hanging on!

My Jag XF is still running it’s original battery from 2009. It doesn’t like it if it’s left for a couple of weeks. But if I use it one or twice a week it Behaves it’s self. I have recently bought a solar panel to trickle charge it, but I expect it will struggle to survive another winter.

I have always found that if your battery is one of the older types that require topping up with deionised water via little unscrewable caps or a long tab, The battery does seem to last for ages for things like CB radios or other 12v things I played with in the garage. However, when you try and use the full cranking power for starting, it just immediately dies - Yes, older batteries did seem to last longer but those were the days of the battery becoming completely isolated or had nothing needing to use it apart from the interior clock when the car isn't used and nowadays, even my old 9000 - uses power to keep various stuff working.
I found an old Compaq 'luggable' red display computer in the loft and unbelieveably after 20years, it had enough charge left still to switch on for 5 seconds.

I once bought a Hawker SBS8 for my motorbike. I don‘t know exactly how old it is, but I paid with Deutsche Mark. Euro was introduced in 2002. It‘ s still going strong.

Wow, that's great going for batteries. I always reckoned getting 10 years out of one was fair enough. Then again, I suppose brand, battery type (calcium etc), sealed/non sealed and use has a bearing on the life. At one time in the distant past I use to buy only BMW batteries from the main dealer if I was hanging onto a car. Those came dry and the acid was supplied separately which was added prior to fitting the battery. They were quality batteries, probably one of the best on the market at the time.
