Not sure if people know this and its just passed me by to be honest but i cant say i have seen any press about it. The DVLA has a new reminder/online license / one stop portal system, that went live last month. www.gov.uk/government/news/dvla-launches-new-online-account-for-motoristsAssociated with this as I have just found with Mrs JP's car (and my collection of toot) that previously set up auto text message reminders on the old system no longer work... As of it would appear mid to late July 2023... To add to the joy of this speaking to the DVLA today there was a 'glitch' in the system and "a large amount" (make of that what you will) of the postal reminders that were due to be sent for cars due car tax in August were never sent. (can you guess when Mrs JP's was due...) Fortunately for us the car in question is a £0.00 rated smart car and we didn't get a fine/ overdue fee but just in case this helps anyone. Jp

I discovered the same thing when I got 2 final notices from the DVLA about the car VED on my MR2 and the wifes Cruiser in mid August. We had had been driving about for 2 weeks with no tax, fortunately no charges/fines were incurred as a result. Was my own fault as I had them on the calender and totally missed them. The MOT reminders still seem to be working as I got a reminder for the Cruiser in mid July.

I nearly got captured when I got a letter telling me the car was out of tax, I never received a reminder in the post as you usually do, it needed to be sorned or taken off the road, 2 weeks out of tax, and 3 weeks out of MOT, I have owned the car less than a years the MOT auto reminder was never sent to me........ I would have checked the tax too, PITA as we were getting ready to bu-ger off to hotter climes, sorted now tho.

That's why I got a snotty letter from DVLA about the tax being due on my Cambridge, but had never received a reminder.
On the plus side, I did get a good recovery job out of it. A couple local to me had gone down to Dorset for a couple of days at an Air B&B. While there, the clutch master cylinder failed on their car. No problem, they had been AA members for 30 years and never needed them before so now was the time to test the service.
The "very apologetic" girl on the helpline explained that as their car wasn't taxed, they wouldn't be able to attend. This was August 4th. The lady explained that she hadn't realised, and hadn't received a reminder anyway, but no problem, she would tax the car immediately on her phone. Apparently, so the lady was told, the AA system doesn't update for up to 5 days, so unless they were prepared to extend their stay, there was still no chance of recovery.

I just assumed my usual reminder letter had been lost by royal mail. Good thing I wrote a reminder on my phone.

I've also had a "glitch" whilst trying to declare a car sorn as a new keeper. You'll never guess what I had to do. Print off and Fill in a paper form, place inside an envelope and post it to said DVLA. By the way 1st Class stamp prices are set to rise by 15p soon.

That’s ridiculous, there will be no PO’s left soon as they keep removing more & more services from them. It will effect loads of people, especially the elderly & those in rural areas

Tbh, I’ve not managed to do a dvla transaction at a post office in the best part of 10 years, despite trying numerous times. The specific type of female staff the post office favour seem to relish turning you away unsuccessful over actually achieving the thing it quite clearly tells you can be done there on the dvla website. Despite me trying to use them as much as possible to keep them in use for my own convenience. Post offices are a victim of their own actions, or more specially actions of the staff who run them.

They can be hit and miss. Oddly, where I am now, they are a hit.
The two near me before were bafflied with a number of forms, and simply claimed they couldn't be done (V111 for tax exemption for example).
The one I used to use for work were OK 80% of the time, but that was with experienced hands at the helm. The closure would affect us, unless the POs have a deal with VOSA.
I used to work in transport. In order to get certain trucks to qualify for discounts, and to allow them to be used abroad/in certain city centres, some had emissions certificates to state they were Euro 5 spec as opposed to Euro 4. These could not be taxed online, and could only be done at a PO. There were other exceptions too.
A shame the POs are closing down. The bigger shame is that the DVLA places shut down all of those years ago. They did make life easier.

That's the exact reason I stopped using them for car tax! Worst one was just after insurance companies switched to paperless documents, the bloomin woman at the post office would not accept my cover note as I had printed it off! 3 attempts it took, she also wouldnt accept the print that the insurance company sent me as it was printed! and that is the last time I used one lol. (my 7000 post & it's a rant, who'd have thunk it lol) Here's a pic of a car with a 7000cc engine

Conversely being in the trade the PO facilities for sorting various tax and V5 issues out is invaluable, not to mention the millions of people who are baffled by (or choose not to be) online stuff. I've signed the petition offered me in the local PO that I use regularly but what good it will do I can only hope.
