The petrol tank on the hijet is peppered with holes & some are quite large. I have a mate who can make an aluminium tank but my tank has an in tank fuel pump which is also corroded & damaged. When he builds the new tank can I just fit an external fuel pump like a facet red top that matches flow rate? It's a 1.3 efi engine if that makes a difference.

You could use an external pump, but it's just more work for a less satisfactory result.
You would need to use a high-pressure pump suitable for injection, unlike a Facet.
In-tank pumps are so ubiquitous that new ones are cheap. Adding a mounting ring for one is trivial if you're already fabricating a new tank.

those level and fuel pump unit lids there look nice for a fabricator to re-use being a simple bolt down flange, as Nick suggests just a replacement intank unit would be simplest option.

My problem is that the actual housing is corroded & the cradle in the tank is pretty poor.

I'd be off to a scrapyard to find those bits from a small engined car with a plastic tank. Sure somebody can pass on a recommendation for a car to use - ford vw etc. that easy to get parts for if needed. James

My problem is that the actual housing is corroded & the cradle in the tank is pretty poor. A complete, new assembly for a V8 Discovery is about £50, and the sealing ring about a fiver. Then you make two plates like this: the square one is welded to the tank, and the ring of holes are tapped. The round one clamps the pump assembly in place. The Discovery tank is quite deep, so you might need to shorten the rods and supply hose a bit. That was necessary to fit the one in the pics to an Avenger tank.

Or you fit a new generic tank with your old in tank pump now mounted on a bracket out of the tank.
Been there and done that, works fine and you know it’s the correct pump

Depending on the length this looks pretty good.

The one I showed is a similar size(Discoveries and Range Rover Classics are very closely related), but is already adjustable in height and easily modified if more is needed, has an integral swirlpot and return, and the gauge sender if you need it. Costs the same too.
I think you can buy the wiring plug, if you don't want to solder wires directly to the terminals.
