As some of you know the Mother City is almost my second home and when I was down there last time I was clicking off a few spots as I went round. Despite the climate being highly aggreable to middle aged British fellows, wine and so on, the climate being coastal isn't so kind to cars. Plenty of salt in the air I think. There are some real neat high end machines about (I saw but did not photograph a beautiful E Type Jag which appeared to have a pearl paint job), and of course the Datsun backies and curious Citi Golfs are everywhere. Some folk are still very retro, I see a surprising amount of one horse power stuff on the roads (actually a decent horse is about 18 BHP) This 100E lives in the suburbs, looks cool as. This is a quite early Mini estate, seemed to be in service with a local business Can't have a Mini without a Beetle, old rivals... And on the whole air-cooled tip Nice old S Class enjoying the view Some folk need a far bigger barge than the Mercedes though.... There was an Eldorado parked in the same spot another day but I didn't get a photo Talking of views, this MGB has a good one Modern Retro - G wagon was the hotel courtesy car. I did mention the profusion of Citi Golfs, yeah? There are plenty of survivors of the 80s and 90s J-tin here Plenty of oddball bikes about if that's your thing. I don't recall seeing a Ka in SA before. This one was sun burnt but amazing, no rust? And this trike, well, seems a proper oddball, and its a regular site in Cape Town inthe CBD.

Went there around 10 years ago and was amused by the number of Australian cars that made it there. At a car show was a lovely Holden FC and parked next to us at our accommodation was a late 90s Ford Falcon, a car that didn't even have a great rep in its home country when new, but had somehow made it there and was still chugging along. They have some cool SA only muscle cars too, like a Chev SS which was actually a Holden Monaro with a nose job, and versions of our GTHO Falcons of the same era.
Back when we went there was a classic car hire business in Capetown. Properly rough business with plenty of lightly bodged cars, but for very little money, and surprisingly little security, we were able to hire a well used 1970s Alfa Spyder for a day of touring the coastline. It was the perfect car to experience the coast in - the hood, when folded, sat on top of the seatbelts, so I suspect if you had an accident your forward motion would throw the roof closed. The doors didn't lock (ideal with SA's reputation) and you needed to feather the throttle just the right way while poking your tongue into the breeze to get it to start when warm. I was disappointed to find that it is no longer in operation when I searched recently.

I lived in Cape Town (Muizenberg) for a few years and had one of those Citi golfs. Great place for retro spotting! Edit: there are some cool museums and shows too in case you haven't found them yet... Highlights were the Wijnland auto museum which is like visiting the most interesting scrap yard possible and the Franschhoek motor museum a little further afield which has some more shiny rarities.

I've yet to visit those, maybe next* time. I've a car enthusiast coworker who lives there so maybe I get him to drive me out. Good tips, thanks So far museums and so on I really just did stuff like the Slave House and the Aparthied gallery.

Great post & mega SA memories for yours truly. Despite living there for 35 years, I never got to visit the mother city which I now regret. Having said that and being a follower of fossil fueled machines, I was fortunate enough to live in the "Detroit" of SA, Port Elizabeth! Now on the subject of rust and being at the coast, I can attest this is/was very real. I was the second owner of a 1977 Cortina 2l GL which by 1980 had copious amounts of rust on the doors, wings and front valance and had to be totally repainted in its pukey advocado green by the following year!! Now I'm back at the coast albeit in Scotland and back with rust Still have the dream to own an SA Interceptor some time!:

grizz - I'm very fond of Cape Town, I've never got the vibe of Johannesburg, just seems like a big sprawl to me, but I do also like Durban. I do need to remember my talc when I go there because I chaffe in the humidity! Much less old cars that side as well. I'm generally round Camps Bay, V&A, CBD, Parrow. I do make it to less fun places like Philipi. If we can swing an "entertainment" we like to go up Stellenboch or Constantia. Most of my "spots" are Camps Bay and Parrow.

Have you won the lottery or something? You go on all these bonkers holidays!
I’ve been to Cape Town a few times, have family in franschoek, the motor museum there is well worth a visit if you’re still over there. I’ve been a few times and every time there’s a whole different set of cars. Apparently they have a rotation of cars in storage and on show. I’ve never seen such a high end collection of old and a few newer cars. It’s on another level.

Have you won the lottery or something? You go on all these bonkers holidays! Its work not holidays. But it is bonkers. OK Japan was a holiday. As was Turkey. But that one was unplanned and I don't want to go into the reasons because it will stir up a politics and the boss will get cross with me. This year - South Africa twice for work so far, Germany, Austria, London a few times, Manchester... Was supposed to go to Athens for a week but it got cancelled. I probably do 4 - 5 trips to SA per year, depending on "business need". At one point I was somewhere almost every week, but they hired a guy to cover Nordics so I don't go out there now, and the war killed off what we were doing in Russia. I've not been to the car museum down there, I should, I just usually am stuck for time as work want thier $$$ out of me when I'm on the clock. I may try take a few days next time, although its running into winter there now...

Thought that was camps bay. Been to SA once, my wife has a couple of times as good friends of ours have a rather large farm in hertbesfontain that we stayed with for a week then headed down to Cape Town for the following week.
It was like a double holiday, on the (very luxurious) farm with giraffe, zebra and ostriche roaming around, motocross track in back garden (our friend was SA KTM enduro champion a few years back) and the day we arrived I was asked if I wanted to spend a day hiring a race bike and doing a track day that his friend was holding at red star raceway. His friend is the boss of superbike magazine SA and has raced against foggy and the like in wsbk. Stayed at his in Jo’berg the night before where he tried to get me smashed on rum before a whole day ringing the neck off the bike. Bought a copy of superbike down in Cape Town the following week and read an article he wrote about track days in it where he stated that it is advised not to go out on the lash the night before and have a clear head! The b@$!@?d
