I can smell the hemp oil and joss sticks from here 😂 Well, tbh I' sort of glad that I can not smell what I associate with what I see on some these pictures! It's quite remarkable, rebrand this lifestyle with digital nomad hipsters, call it #vanlife and suddenly its "on trend". I was more thinking of the whole tiny house thing some people decided for or were forced into because of the lack of affordable living space. Don't forget Datman is seeking this local landmark This reminds me of some vehicles I was able to see as a child. Old vans with beetles, renault 4s or fiat 500s welded on top. Hardly any pictures available today, I guess pinterest ate them all.

Used to see that Green Goddess / caravan on top around Crawley, the old Pease Pottage car boot site parked on Parrish Lane and Horsham West Sussex but not seen since covid era. Followed it one Sunday morning around roundabout near Handcross and smoke coming out the exhaust smelt more chip pan oil than diesel. Strange old form of transport yet in my own way i admired the bold unorthodox approach yet built on solid foundations for probably all the right reasons to the owner at the time

∆∆∆ I did hear that there's quite a few 'vanlife' guys and gals living in that sort of thing, in and around the area, need to be local for work, but can't afford the rents 😟

If he wanted to be near family, he’d have to accept that he could not buy locally and decently. The only way would be to move over an hour away, live in a poor area (great as bike crime is rising ; he had a bike), and basically add that onto his time. He luckily could just about afford the rent but barely. Home ownership just kept on slipping that bit further out over time. This; with his and his other half’s deposit money, and a bit of a loan, they bought a motorhome, converted from a Luton. I’ll grab a shot one day. It’s a lovely old thing. However, this thread reminded me. Years ago, I saw this somewhere. It’s quite a cool thing. Whether it’s a New Age Travelller, is another discussion.

So where has this moved to in current times? I can think of two examples of similar lifestyles led by Youtube posters. There's the previous life led by Camping With Steve: This is the other guy I was thinking of: www.youtube.com/@theurbanmotorhomePut in 'van life' in the search and you bring up loads of examples. I appreciate the background and mindset of most of these people are different to those back then, but is this basically what it is now?

Friends did a similar thing with a narrowboat, but BWA and the IWA put so many obstacles in the way that they were forced to become land dwellers again. At least with a van, you don't appear to have so many stupid restrictions 🙄

Like everything even remotely interesting, it's become gentrified and polished for the Instagram age. Or perhaps that's the only way you can actually live a nomadic lifestyle without stigma these days? I dunno. Anyway, have a Kassböhrer I saw in Croatia in the summer:

I'm a liveaboard narrowboater (have done so for the last 5 years, currently building a replacement boat) and really my life aim is to never bother owning a house but to buy some land, have a decent workshop and live in a bus on it. I'm fairly young (24) with a reasonable job, so could live conventionally, but why would you want to, it's dull! Travellerhomes is a huge and potentially dangerous inspiration to plans like this... Here's a van friends of mine used to live in, but they've now upgraded to an LT35 (brick shape) luton which is lovely inside

I appreciate the background and mindset of most of these people are different to those back then, but is this basically what it is now? For me the "Tune in, drop out" aspect is broader similar, but the perception is totally different... very few aspired to be a new age traveller, indeed the general view was hugely disparaging(if not abusive). Fast forward its a very different demographic and promoting as aspirational lifestyle in some quarters..Sure there are some adopting "van life" out of necessity, but a lot don't. Possibly more interesting is that there is an increasing negative reaction to van life from residents in certain areas due to litter, dubious toilet habits etc.... so perhaps not that far removed.

Massive negative publicity in NZ due to tourists doing it and leaving rubbish and curse word everywhere (literally) previously you could pretty much park up and nobody bothered.

dodgerover that was/is more to do with lots of freedom campers travelling the country in vans they either buy or rent that do not have facilities for their waste product. Lifestylers generally are left alone as they tend to keep away from the public eye. But yes it has caused a backlash to people camping where they like and is forcing them into more organised grounds. Plenty of regional govt and govt run grounds with differing facilities around the country though they fill up very quickly as summer comes, many use a booking system.

In Queenstown one can't even sleep off a skin full in the back of a parked car. Queenstown Lakes District Council claims such a practice equates to freedom camping and penalises perpetrators accordingly.

I do miss my old bus but it was a tad big and needed more time and money spending on it than I could afford. Perhaps another soon… Wished I’d bought a butterfly grilled Bedford Vega back in the day though.
