As the title says I am looking at moving the gearstick position forward on a type 9 gearbox to avoid having to cut the transmission tunnel on my next project. I am still at the parts gathering stage but was wondering what is involved in doing this. I have been looking on the ford forums and while several threads touch on the subject none really tell you what to do. The threads are all old so have missing pictures and dead links now. I realise that I obviously need to cut and reweld the alloy casing but the selector rod has to be cut by the same amount. What I am wanting to know is how you get that selector rod out of the gearbox before I start cutting. Do I have to strip the gearbox down to get it out or is there a simpler way? Anybody on here done this before?  |

MK2 son converted a 4x4 V6 box to rwd a year or so ago, it's really just a matter of removing the tailshaft casing and the selector rod comes out fairly easily afterwards. I won't be seeing him for a couple of days, but next time I do I'll check, I'm sure it wasn't too difficult.
If I forget, remind me, I've got a memory like a sieve!

If it's going in a midget I would cut the tunnel.
It barely moves a couple of inches and is actually in a much better position.
If it isn't then ignore all of the above.

You need to remove the tail housing take shifter rod out (just a roll pin) cut the gear stick housing off, trim the housing so it can be moved forward, get it all welded back together then shorten the shifter rod a corresponding amount.

Buy a type 9 from a transit, shift lever is forward.

I’ve done it a couple of times. Make sure when you weld it back together, you put the tail housing back on the box and fit the prop shaft. This will help stop distortion.

Lebowski, thanks for the link to your thread. It is exactly what I was looking for and has made me feel much more confident about doing this. The cutting and welding didn't concern me but the thought of having to strip out gearbox internals is voodoo to me!
dodgerover, Thanks for the suggestion but the transit gearbox has the shifter too far forward and it is located on the side of the box making it wider and would actually need more cutting to get it in.
Jonsey, good tip about the distortion. I will do thats.
