Nissan Cube. Anyone own one, or owned one? With the probable implementation of ULEZ my dear old C15 van might not be viable for my business anymore….😥 Was wondering if a Cube, with the seats removed and rear windows ‘vinyl-ed’ might make a decent, quirky van? Or a petrol Berlingo or Kangoo……..

Sorry can’t help you on any of your questions, never driven one, but I do think they look well cool & seem to have much potential. Look forward to the responses on this

In short, yes, that's why I bought mine about 5 years ago. It's had a sinclair c5 in the and loads of furniture and a washing machine, and that's without removing the seats, the square boxy shape is so handy. It's been reliable and practical and all that boring stuff. A little juicy of fuel but if you don't mind being looked at like you've just dropped out of the sky it's perfect.

Best bet is look at some reviews for the year of Cube you are considering. If its older you need to go petrol as diesels before 2015 don't get exempted.

Depends if you mean z11 or z12.
Z11 is Possibly the worst car I’ve owned recently.
Dangerously underpowered, horrendous on fuel(my 63 Ford falcon with a 3.3l straight six was noticeably better), unreliable, expensive on parts.
They look cool and are reasonably practical and have a cool interior. Nothing else about them is good though, all the running gear is overstretched being used in a vehicle of its size and shape and the auto makes them particularly terrible.
Z12 are a bit better but are also less ‘cubey’ so lose a lot do their cool and appeal.

I like the earlier ones but I had literally no idea they were so old now. Only thing that puts me off are the points that Dez made, which is always surprising given they’re Japanese.

I had one... Epically cool to look at, boringly reliable, fun to drive, and acres of room inside. But as Dez pointed out, dangerously underpowered. If you're using it to bimble around the town it's very good, but out on the motorway it's the complete lack of acceleration that's the problem. It will get up to motorway speeds but it takes forever.

my friend has a uk manual car, which may alleviate any driving issues mentioned earlier. ive driven it and it seemed to go well to me. its lowered on custom coilovers and a nice set of enkeis and its a constant talking point wherever he goes, he says its the best car he's ever owned.

I really like the idea of one and saw a 2000MY one with a nice history not far from here but a/c is a must for me and all the ones I've ever seen never have it, though I know it was an option. They look like they'd be a greenhouse on a hot day without it?

In short, I've had a lot of cars without a/c, as well as a fair few with and, particularly over recent years/summers, there's no way I'd daily a car without a/c again.

I had a similar quandary recently when looking for a replacement for my old Combo van. The criteria was: Spacious, economical, sliding doors, aircon, auto, interesting (or easily modified to be interesting) and ULEZ exempt. I ended up with a J-import Honda Freed Spike Hybrid. It's not fast - but it's very useful and quite comfy. I'm not sure you'll find another for sale in the UK though...there's a few 7 seat (non-Spike) variants about but the space isn't quite as flexible. edit: I've realised you didn't mention a budget, but I assume you're finding the same issues as I had - anything ULEZ exempt is annoyingly expensive. My Freed was £5750...about £5000 more than the usual amount I'd spend on a daily - but my hand was somewhat forced.

If engine power is an issue, it's worth pointing out that later (~2007>>)versions of the JDM-only Z11 were available with a 1.5 litre engine which had ~25hp more than the earlier 1.4. The JDM Z12 also received this engine, whereas European-supplied cars got a 1.6 with about the same power output.
A friend of mine has the later Z11 1.5 Cube Cubic, which is slightly longer due to having 7 seats, and quick enough for most people. It ticks a lot of boxes.

Holy mother of Japanese folding things, Batmansan! Why don't we ever get stuff like this over here? The Fit/Beat has similar clever seats which fold up, down, flat into the floor and they're hollow underneath. It's SO useful.

I would agree, I have had both a J import when they first started coming in and more recently a UK supplied manual one but as usual with most of my cars I didn't realise how good a model I had. I really do wish I had kept the UK one it was a great car

If you like the style of the Cube, the KIA Soul was similar in vibe.
How about a Peugeot 307/308 wagon? I've just bought one as a family car, cheap to buy (over here) lots of space with seats that clip out easily, and quite nice to drive.
