I have another Mk3 Astravan It was parked up in 2014 and sat, I’m working through things to make it mot ready, then plan on getting an MOT before engine swapping. It starts and runs, but smokes when revved… I suspect the diesel, and it’s got about half a van, has been in there since it was parked up and an east fix would be to put fresh diesel in. Being lazy I’m wondering if it will be enough to put 20l of fresh in, or should I drain it and just run fresh fuel… can’t exactly drive it until it’s used up as it’s got no mot Thanks

If you want to be sure that’s the cause of the smoke (and it might not be), you need to drain what’s in there before adding fresh. I’d suggest a new filter too.
You can always put the fuel you drain off back through it but by bit once it’s up and running.

I tried it up the road today, and it ran then lost power, then ran again.. all whilst smoking when under load
I’ve ordered a pela pump (mainly because it should be useful for other things too) and will suck the tank out and put some fresh in
Cheers

If it's got bio-d or veg in it that had been stood so long there a good chance it's got clad, will stink and be full of black goo.

If it's got bio-d or veg in it that had been stood so long there a good chance it's got clad, will stink and be full of black goo. The Isuzus run well on veg, have heard the low blows don’t like it, so think it’ll be diesel. The PO bought it in 2014 and parked it up, and was losing his storage so sold it early this year. It looks like it was a work van prior to that. It’s got about 1/2 tank in it, starts ok but smokes…. Hopefully draining and swapping filter will be enough. It’s going to be engine swapped to a petrol, so not worth spending too much time on, just be nice to MOT before I start.

I took the fuel filter off and emptied it. There is no sign of diesel bug, so that sort of confirms this is pre-ethanol diesel (so been in there since it was parked up) It sticks like varnish and is really dark obviously, and the photo doesn’t really show it, but you can sort of see the water on the top Just waiting for the pela pump now, to drain the tank before putting some new in and priming. Thanks for the help

EN 590 has been about since the early 90's so there's a fair chance there's some biodiesel in the fuel. Might be worth considering putting some biocide treatment in with the fresh fuel just in case there is any microbial contamination in the fuel system. I know from experience offshore that it can turn a day tank (8000 gallons IIRC) of fuel to jelly in a few days and it can be an absolute barsward to get rid of.

Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

Whilst the tank is drained , undo the gauge sender, fuel pick up thing and clean the tank strainer ( plus posibly more curse word from the bottom of the tank)
