Sitting here drunk on beer and paint fumes I started to think about what cars I would love to own but haven't (as yet), i'm not so much thinking of the dream cars that you would buy with a lottery win but cars you could own if you sold your current retro car and bought something else with the money. The attainable classic so to speak.
My (current) list is:
Rover SD1 (any engine just love the shape) Citreon DS/ID (1950's-1970's version not the modern one). Ford Corsair Nissan Figaro Jaguar MK10/420G Jaguar MK1 (2.4 with the narrow grille ideally). MG Magnette (the 1950's version). Ford Scorpio Estate (the 1990's one that everyone said was ugly but to me has aged really well). Morris Marina (just because my dad had one and I cut my mechanical teeth on these as a kid). Sunbeam Stilleto (never owned any sort of Imp variant but just love the look of these).
What are yours?
I'm starting to think that with the advent of the electric car, the potential decline in fuel sales and ultimatley what will happen to the internal combustion engine when fuel is harded to get, what cars I really need to start thinking about buying before its just too late for someone of modest means like me to own and run even at weekend.

Hillman Imp Trabant Estate (for a swap to some other engine) some good old boxy Volvo estate (240, 850, 960 or the likes) Citroen GS Break ... That's what sprung to my mind thinking for a minute. Tomorrow my list could look different.

Hillman Avenger - in circumstances similar to those you find yourself in at present I placed a bid on eBay for an immaculate, one owner, low mileage Plymouth Cricket/Hillman Avenger. I was the highest bidder for ages and it was when sobriety and the reality of my looming murder at the hands of my wife set in that I started to hope I was outbid... I was and, I kind of regret it - the Avenger was our family car when I was a kid and it held many memories of my mum... c'est la vie.
Jensen Interceptor - I was offered a project Jensen of few years back - one owner, California car - the lady's husband had been working on it when he died. It was in pretty good shape and she said I could have it for $1,000 as she knew it was a car I really wanted. I made the mistake of asking permission from the missus (do you see a theme developing here?), she of course, recognizing the significance of the car said "no". In hindsight I should have done the deal, brought it home and said "look what I bought" My dad worked in the Jensen showroom in the West End in the early 70s and there was one of these parked on my way home from school - I regret this missed opportunity to this day and likely always will.
As for the rest, my wife says it would easier to list the cars I didn't want...

I'm just a scattergun on any larger American cars from like 1957 to 1979 and maybe a few years either side.
I also would very much like to own an Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire 346, Jowett Javelin, Riley RMB and a few of those old very British British cars from the late 40s through 50s. Maybe an early "mark type" Super Snipe.

Nothing with a blue oval, lovely as they are, as prices for those can't be described as sensible or attainable by any standard and as this list needs to be based on realistic expectations, the Mk2 RS2000 that used to top this list has gone into lottery win territory.
The rest of the list:
Rover P6 3500S Triumph Dolomite Sprint Honda VFR400 NC30 BMW E36 323i Sport Touring BMW E30 325i 4dr BMW E21 323i Peugeot 106 GTI Mk1 Vauxhall Cavalier SRI

Theres not much out there worth a build anymore.
Ado16 has been on my list for years. Obvious choice that no one ever gets right really.
Maybe a Daf veriomatic of some flavour.

In an ideal world I'd keep the Z32 Nissan Fairlady forever with one or more of the below. Going up, but still nothing like as ludicrously priced as the Supras/Skylines/Silvias they were pitched alongside...
No order, no theme: Austin A40 Farina Mk2. (preferably with one of those nifty Nissan CG13 swaps from the chap on here) MG MGB GT (preferably with an M16/T16 swapped in) Dolomite Sprint P10 Primera eGT E34 525tds (but only a manual touring, if you can even find one...) AE111 Trueno Sprinter (the fwd one people only want so they can rip the 20v 4A-GE out) Phase one Pug 106 Rallye 90s Suzuki Swift/Cultus/Subaru Justy Mercedes W124 Wagon (six pot, diesel, manual, again, if you can find one) XJ40 (in almost-black Green with the quad round headlights) Mk3 Vauxhall Ashtray (van, specifically) 2nd Generation Plymouth Barracuda (the one that's neither the early 'pretty' one nor the later Hemi 'Cuda one) Panda Sisley 4x4 Porsche 924 (yes, the one with the Audi engine that later got put in a van) Lotus Excel
I also wouldn't say no to another Rover Metro. A mk3 two door with the 1.4 16 valve this time, rather than the granny spec 1.1 four door Mk4. Quite sweet little cars. Would also like to sample an R8 Rover at some point.
240Zs have gone silly money, E types even sillier, Elans are pricey these days. Even Jensen-Healeys have gone mad and no one even remembers they exist... I'd love a Spridget but would unfortunately need one for each foot.

My dream car probably would be the Manta fully re-sprayed with the roll cage fitted, interior sorted and 200hp or more at the wheels. Unfortunately doesn't look like I'll be able to afford to get the work done, so any of the ones below will make a good alternative if they fall within budget.
Skoda Estelle preferably rally prepared Talbot Sunbeam Ti Toyota MR2 mk1 or mk3 Darrian/Davrian rally car Autoazam AZ-1 Rover 200 coupe Smart Roadster Coupe Citroen AX GTI Metro GTI ABS Freestyle Opel Kadett C Coupe Lotus Elise or VX220 Imp Californian or Sunbeam Stiletto Austin/Rover Mini - Rally car or highly modified
My wife on the other hand would probably prefer it if I got rid of the Manta and used the money to convert our VW T4 into a Camper!

It would be the exact list of cars I already own.
If you don’t have the stumbling block of finances in your way, why would you not own exactly what you want? You’re only holding yourself back if you don’t.

Since i've not long finished a project, have just sold 2 other cars and have another 2 almost ready for sale, this is not so much a realisable fantasy, but a serious decision i'll have to make soon!
The List is pretty short, i've whittled it down to 2 possibilities:-
Triumph 2000 Estate
RM Riley
Either of which is likely to aquire something resembling an RB20DET Nissan motor!
For those of you whose list includes a Dolly Sprint, (seems like most of you) one of my upcoming sales is a Dolly Sprint. My advice is get one soon, before they get up there with the RS2000 and out of reach to mere mortals like us!

My Lancia Monecarlo project is still viable, and I stare at it intently each week. Still, It will never be sensible. My love of Euro Sedans is growing by the day. Strangely, one of my all time cars of lust is the Fiat 124 Sedan. To me, it is a perfect blank canvas for thoughtful performance upgrades that I would hide well to preserve the charming nature of the stock look. I want one so badly that I'd likely trade my Montecarlo for the right one... They are all but absent here in the States. Equally, the Alfa Romeo Alfetta Sedan. Perfect 50/50 weight distribution, 130bhp Twin Cam and just adorable to behold. So much performance potential for these. Much to all of the Alfa GTV6 spec suspension parts transfer over nicely to it, and there are available aftermarket suspension parts that exceed GTV6 spec. For that matter, the Busso V6 will drop in it with plenty of room, but that's a step too far for me. I guess "sensible" is a low bar compared to my strict two seater mid-engine wedge design where you struggle to hear your passenger over the induction sound coming from a foot behind your head... With these two Sedans, you can take three of your friends comfortably, there are plenty of available spares, and a skilled owner can keep them on the road reasonably easily.
