I’ve competed up there several times over the years. A guy called Dai Dwr used to run a championship up there over the winter. For the first couple of years it was a shale surface. I took Autograss cars then with no screens so it would be freezing in the car. In fact a mate gave me a couple of photos from the first time I went there in a mk2 Escort grass car that I crashed into a large rock there. I’ll have to post the pics. I rolled my Mk1 Fiesta grass car there after hitting a gate post, ripping a front strut off. I won my class there in a Nissan Sunny grass car there too.
I even took the Astra GTE I rebuilt there too while it was still a grass car with a welded diff. I seriously scared myself in that as at 70mph along the straight and changing to 3rd, the car decided to jump into the hedge. When I rebuilt my Escort this was first place I took it to compete after a whole family effort to finish the car the night before. It was a sealed surface stage by then though.
It’s a very entertaining stage and if anyone gets the chance to go round there, give it a go as you won’t be disappointed.

We had private testing on Monday that included this lovely 1970 Hill climb spec Mini. New to the stage and no room for a co-driver but loved the day. I didn't get a picture of the Grp 4 Mk2 Escort you can see next to it which is driven by Oliver Davies. The car has rallied since 2015 in America and the UK with 30 starts in total. Stephen Pritchards lovely club level Nova SR had a few issues miss firing during testing but he has a spare equal spec 1400cc engine to fit prior to his next event, It said the car runs around 200bhp. Car and driver took 3 class wins in three events at the end of 2021. 12 Starts, 5 Class wins and 2 retirements is quite a nice record. For those who may follow rallying we had a number of special drivers attend the test day. This year Jason Pritchard is taking on the British Rally Championship, however he can't compete in his usual Ford Focus WRC due to regulations. He has instead hired an R5 VW Polo from Melvyn Evans Motorsport. Jason text me to book last minute testing and when they turned up on the day both Melvyn and his son Meirion Evans attended too. That's a lot of rally knowledge testing one car! Melvyn is well known for building and looking after some of the best machines and crews in rallying with his company. That's before you even get to his 30 years as a driver competing in some of the worlds top spec cars. He holds a massive 154 starts, 37 class wins and 35 total victories. Melvyn Evans Motorsport according to EWRC own 8 rally cars currently which include a Fabia R5 WRC, no less than 5 Polo R5 WRC's, Chassis 3 S9 WRC Impreza originally driven by none other than Tommi Makinen and an 06 Impreza WRC previously driven by Petter Solberg and Colin McRae. Mierion Evans, his son is still under 30 and catching his father already at 84 starts and already gathering 14 class wins. Jason Pritchard holds just as many accolades as those looking after him this season with 3x Asphalt championships to his name in his 2005 Focus WRC. He also has 2x British Historic tittles to his name in a Mk2 Escort RS1800. The Focus was never actually used as a works car but interestingly M Sport had enough parts to build one last machine. It was sold to a Jamaican who used it in 2011. The car was then sold to the Pritchard family in 2012. the RS1800 I Don't have a picture of but prior to Jasons ownership it had been used by Gwyndaf Evans and Stig Blomqvist. Anyhow that background is my excuse for sticking up a few images of the Polo R5 that Jason is using for the BRC season. His main sponsor is their family company NRG but hes also has a Jerky sponsor....sounds tasty.

Sorry for the lack of updates but retros have been limited at the stage recently. I do have a very cool car to share but I can't until the official film for it has been released. We did have a fresh build Mk2 Escort for testing a few weeks back. Quite a typical build at the minute with 300bhp NA engine and paddle shift. The car and crew came over from Ireland for a full days testing.

Superb photos. I've always gravitated more to the pits areas of any motorsport, the atmosphere, hustle and bustle and general smell is all just as interesting as the actual racing, especially watching the teams that have maybe not had the best luck turn it around double time. These 'behind the scenes' shots are all part of that story, thanks for sharing!
That Focus looks to be the season they started using the 'boost bumper', a whopping great tank containing the boost dumped on overrun for use later on.... genius, as the air had already passed through the restrictor plate, and was thus 'legal'. That's the sort of 'interpretation' of the rules we all love, and quite a special little car from the last days of rallying before tipping the balance too far towards custom turbonutjob stuff, away from road going vehicles.

Yes its the thing that I love about managing a private rally stage is the behind the scenes. Most people get to see these cars at some point but in a paddock full of other people and cars. Here at the stage we get up close and personal with cars and crews and get all the banter and stories that you would not get at other events.
