Just realised that with time slipping by you can now get some modern RR's c. 2002. So what 2002 cars are there out there that get your juices going that can be on 'classic' insurance? Rule: It's got to be on an 02 or 52 plate. (i.e. 20 years old) Fill your boots! One of these, possibly in this colour, if I can find a 1.4 petrol could be added to the stable as I have the £cash burning a hole and an incling to own one. Either that or a virtually impossible to find nice condition low mileage 2002 Audi A3?

My E46 is on a 51 plate and it never even occurred to me that it could go on a classic policy. Its not old enough for that sort of thing ...

One of these.... It would be a pre facelift, which is good because they made it look worse when they updated it. That is assuming you can find a good one. I had a new 190 on a 52 plate, a brilliant car for its day. They all seem to have disappeared.

Nice idea…… but are you sure you can get classic insurance terms on cars like those? I have tried and failed to get classic insurance on my 26 year old A6, 27 year old A8 and, more recently a different and rather nicer 22 year old A8.

The Maza RX-8 (2002-2012) has appreciated MASSIVELY over the past two years, examples with no hot start issues were fetching £500-800 pre-pandemic, there's almost nothing under £2500 now, especially the 230bhp Renesis versions. Last of the Wankels, future classic material I reckon. Image courtesy Car Magazine

Just picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago... absolute hoot to drive and not gonna get any cheaper. Parts are cheap and plentiful although the Cooper S's are surprisingly thirsty...

So I went on a 360 mile round trip today - mixture of M1, M25, M11 etc. and I was surprised at how few 20 year old cars there were doing that sort of motoring. Maybe they're relegated to local run only motors?
So what I saw was:
Mk4 Golfs (saw these the most) A Citroen Saxo! Boxster Mondeo An Audi A2 Honda Civic 3 door A couple of Citroen Berlingo vans
and that literally was about it. Don't think I got far in to double figures. Not many 20 year old cars are out there now.

Yeah it's slim pickings out there for retro dailies, must be winter. There's a P plate 1.1L Saxo that I see every morning on my commute driven by a young lass, tempted to flag her down and give her my number (in case she ever sells it ). It's the exact same colour as my first car, although my Saxo was the 1.4. Nothing an engine swap wouldn't fix!

I will add on this to anyone buying a modern classic As always shop around for your insurance Some companies point blank don’t recognise the 20 year old stuff as classic

My newest car is a ‘96 A6 and that gets used for everything (it was a rally car on Wednesday evening). Haven’t managed to find anyone who’ll take it on as a classic basis (even if I had something more modern for daily duties).
Driving my ‘67 Vitesse today (mapping the new ITBs with auto-tune). That is on a classic policy obviously.

Spoke to RH Insurance this morning and seems the 20 year rule is a bit make/model specific.
I asked about an Audi A2 and they said no to that, but couldn't really give me any advice other than there's more chance if the vehicle is pre-2000 and depends on how/where it is stored, access to other vehicles etc. etc.

Its really not like the 'Historic' VED and MOT classification which cars automatically qualify for when they reach 40, the whole 'classic insurance' definition is very much a grey area and being 20 years old isn't a given.
Unfortunately most early 2000 stuff is a bit...dull shall we say.

It was RH Specialist who initially said no to my A6 (25 years at the time) and the various A8s. Even though I’ve had Triumphs with them for knocking on 20 years. I did try a couple of others but no joy there either.

I am not with them at the moment, but a few years ago, Footman James always accepted my 10+ year old cars of various makes on a multi car classic policy with agreed values.

Whilst the wife was isolating with covid over xmas, I did what any normal petrolhead would do and spent hours on ebay/facebook etc looking at cars I had always fancied buying. The little 172 cup clios seem to be rising in value (as is everything) and so myself and our daughter went to 'look' at this fine example. I cant believe they are 20 years old now. I remember a mare having one brand new back in 2002. To be honest it is a right laugh and has properly brought enjoyment back to driving for me. Its not fast despite the 2ltr NA engine which has seen several upgrades. But its really fun.
